WESTVILLE – Edmund Thomas Doucette, age 60, of North Main Street, Westville, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 13, 2009, at the Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow. Born September 9, 1948, in New Glasgow, he was the son of the late Edmund and Catherine (Cyr) Doucette. Ed was well known in Pictou County as a school principal. He started his teaching career at New Glasgow Junior High School, where he also acted as vice-principal. His first position as principal was at the A.G. Baillie and West Side Schools, New Glasgow. He later served as principal of West Pictou District High School, before finishing his career at Walter Duggan Consolidated and Victoria Middle School, Westville. In his career, and throughout his life, Ed showed strong leadership skills. He was past president of the Pictou County School Administrators Association, past president of Pictou County Minor Hockey Association, and a former Co-ordinator of Religious Education at the Church of the Holy Name, Westville. A talented athlete, Ed enjoyed playing hockey, baseball, curling, and in his later years, was an avid golfer, holding a membership at the Abercrombie Golf Club. He continued his involvement in athletics, coaching hockey in both the Westville and Pictou County Minor Hockey Associations, baseball in the Kinsmen Minor Baseball Program, and softball in the Stellarton and Area Girls Minor Softball Program. Ed will be dearly missed by his loving wife of over 35 years, Janet (Eagles); daughter, Beth, Westville; sons, Eddie (Jenn), Edmonton, AB; Rob (Lori), Victoria, BC. He is also survived by brothers: Fred, Westville; Bob (Sharon), Fredericton, NB; Michael (Carol), Inuvik, NWT; sisters: Dorothy Doucette, Lorraine Cyr (Raymond), Sylvia Eagles (David), Carolyn Cameron (Dana), all of Westville; nephew, Kevin Doucette, Halifax; father-in-law, Osborne Eagles; brother-in-law, Art Eagles (Bonny); as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by sister, Helen Doucette; sister-in-law, Ann Doucette; mother-in-law, Wilma Eagles, and sister-in-law, Joyce Eagles. Visitation will be held at Eagles Funeral Home, Westville, today from 7 to 9 p.m. and Friday 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral service will be held from the Church of the Holy Name, Westville, Saturday at 11 a.m. with Father Ray Huntley as celebrant. Interment will be in the Auburn Cemetery, Westville. Over the past nine years, Ed showed tremendous determination and perseverance in his battle with Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, through his two bone marrow transplants, and most recently, with Acute Leukemia. Throughout these ordeals, both Ed and his family became aware of the preciousness and importance of blood transfusions, and request that you consider becoming a blood donor or registering as a bone marrow donor.
