THOMAS ARTHUR KIRKPATRICK

KIRKPATRICK, THOMAS ARTHUR The death of Thomas Arthur Kirkpatrick of Beaverdam and formerly of Fredericton, husband of Alice A. (Hay) Kirkpatrick, occurred on Wednesday, April 9, 2003 at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital. Born in Saint John, he was the son of the late Annie Kirkpatrick. Tom started work as a young man of 14, delivering yarn with his bicycle. At age 15, he worked cutting trees for the Department of National Defense in McGivney; at 16, he learned the machinist trade in Moncton, and worked at the Saint John Dry Dock for a year. He joined the Navy at age 18, and served for 2 years during World War II. He managed the Irving Oil Bulk Plant in Barker's Point for a short time, and in 1951 joined Metropolitan Life as an insurance salesman, attained his CLU in 1961, and continued in the insurance business for most of his life. Tom was a former President of the forerunner to the Fredericton Association for Community Living, and was Chairman of the Murray Humes School for several years. He was a faithful church member, who liked to read the Bible and also taught Sunday School. In addition to his wife of 55 years, Tom is survived by his children, Gerald Kirkpatrick of Beaverdam, Peter Kirkpatrick of Napadogan, and Joyce Humble (Douglas) of Rusagonis; a granddaughter, Erica Humble of Rusagonis; his mother-in-law, Hazel Hay of Williamsburg; a brother-in-law, Garnet Hay (Shirley) of Williamsburg; sisters-in-law Marie MacKay of Fredericton, Connie O'Leary (Mike) of Nasonworth, Joan Hay of Fredericton, and Velma Hay of Williamsburg; and several nieces and nephews. Tom was predeceased by an infant daughter, Zana in 1957; brothers-in-law Owen Hay and Ferdinand Hay and father-inlaw, Donald Hay. Visitation will take place at York Funeral Home, 302 Brookside Drive, Fredericton North, on Thursday from 2-4 and 7-9 PM. The funeral service will be held on Friday at 2:00 PM from York Funeral Home's T. Gordon MacLeod Memorial Chapel. Rev. Dr. Brad Little will officiate, assisted by Rev. Murray McFarlane. Interment will take place at a later date in Forest Hill Cemtery. The pallbearers will be Gerald Cogswell, Hedley Forbes, Gerald Keirstead, Charlie Colwell, Ray LaMoine, and Doug Ashfield. The honourary pallbearers will be Elwood McGee, Richard Churchill, Vincent Caseley, Ralph Bishop, and Vince Peterson. For those who wish, remembrances to the Palliative Care Unit, the Royal Canadian Legion Branch # 4 Building Fund, the Multiple Sclerosis Society, or to Jobs Unlimited would be appreciated by the family. Personal condolences may be offered via www.yorkfh.com. A Royal Canadian Legion Tribute service will be held on Thursday at 7:00 PM at the funeral home. A reception will follow the funeral service at the family home in Beaverdam.
