Passed on: June 1st, 2008

PICTOU – G. Jean DeCoste, 77, a lifelong resident of Pictou, N.S., passed away peacefully June 1, 2008, in Glen Haven Manor, New Glasgow. Born in Pictou January 27, 1931, the daughter of the late Ethel Pope and Lawrence Kiggins, she was adopted at birth by her maternal grandparents, the late Edgar Charles and Mary Adelaide (Cameron) Pope, Pictou. Jean was married Oct. 9, 1953, to John D. ‘Jock’ DeCoste, who predeceased her in 1990. As a young woman, she was an employee of the Royal Bank of Canada, Pictou, but for most of her married life, she was a ‘stay-at-home mom’, a role that was greatly appreciated by her children, and by her grandchildren when they came along. Jean was an avid sports fan, in particular hockey and her beloved Montreal Canadiens. She was an active volunteer with the Pictou Minor Hockey Association for many years, and was the recipient of a Community Volunteer award. She was a member of St. James Anglican Church, where she taught Sunday school and participated in most church women’s activities. She enjoyed spending time at the family cottage in Caribou River, and particularly enjoyed the company of her grandchildren. Jean is survived by her daughter, Mary (Andy) Currie, Pictou, with whom she had lived; sons, John (Twila), Aylesford; Bruce (Lori), Taber, AB; grandchildren: Alex and Craig Currie, Halifax; Natalie Currie, Pictou; Jock DeCoste, Taber; Danielle DeCoste, Pictou; sister, Isobel “Belle” MacKean, Maritime IOOF Home, Pictou; half-sisters: Margaret Homeniuk, Pat Piper and Lynda (Vince) Ziglo; a number of nieces and nephews; special family friend, Bette Perry, Halifax and Caribou River. Besides her husband, she was predeceased by an infant daughter, Nancy Jean; sister, Kathleen (Kay) Young; brother, James Pope. Thanks to all who helped with Mum’s care, including the Victorian Order of Nurses, Dr. Gordon Young, and special thanks to the staff of Glen Haven Manor for doing everything they could to make Mum’s last few months as comfortable as possible. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held Wednesday, June 4, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the McLaren Funeral Home, Pictou. Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Thursday, June 5, from St. James Anglican Church, Pictou, with Archdeacon Peter Armstrong and Rev. William White officiating. Interment in St. James Cemetery. Donations in Jean’s memory may be made to the Arthritis Society or to the Pictou Minor Hockey Association.
