HELEN ADA (DOOKS) HOSKIN
HOSKIN, HELEN ADA (DOOKS) Helen Ada (Dooks) Hoskin, 84, passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, June 19th, 2003, after a brief, courageous battle with cancer, surrounded by her loving family. Born in Halifax in 1918, Helen was the daughter of the late Willoughby and Ada Dooks. She attended Bloomfield High School and graduated from The Halifax Academy School of Business. Helen was a keen bowler, belonging to the Sunset Bowling League and Ashburn Ladies League. She volunteered for over thirty years with Mental Health patients, the Brunswick-Cornwallis Pre-school, and the Neurology and Speech and Hearing Clinics of the I.W.K. Hospital. The I.W.K. Hospital Board of Governors presented Helen with an Honourary Life-Membership in 1987 and an Award of Merit in 1995 "in recognition of exceptional commitment and exemplary service as a volunteer". She was a member of Edgewood Church U.C.W. (Daffodil Section) and a long time member of the Westmount Chapter I.O.D.E., serving as secretary for many years. She leaves to mourn her husband, Harry, one son and three daughters: David (Joan) Hoskin, Halifax; Diane (Charles) Ramsey, Fredericton, NB; Patty (Al Bergin) Hoskin, Lakeview, NS; Kathy (Blair) Gough, Lower Sackville, NS; two granddaughters: Dr. Patti (Sue) Ramsey, Fredericton, NB; Dr. Suzanne (Dr. Conrad Fernandez) Ramsey, Halifax; seven grandsons: Sean (Barbie MacDonald) Hoskin, Halifax; Dr. Aaron (Dr. Alicia Kam) Hoskin, Germany; Christopher (Jill) Ramsey, Seattle, Washington; Matthew (Jill) Patterson, Fall River, NS; Blake (Amy) Patterson, Montreal, PQ; Robert and Michael Gough, Lower Sackville, NS; four great-grandchildren; Nicholas and Caroline Fernandez, Halfiax; Emily Patterson, Fall River, NS, and Annabel Hoskin Ramsey, Seattle, Washington. Helen deeply touched all who knew her and she will be dearly missed by family and friends. Many thanks to Dr. Rosemary White, her family physician and Dr. Bruce Colwell, her Oncologist, also, her Health Care team, especially Barbara Stewart and the Palliative Care Unit. Our heartfelt gratitude to our guide and mentor through this difficult time. Dr. Conrad Fernandez, Rev. Diane MacVicar provided comfort to Helen and her family. The family will be receiving friends at the J.A. snow Funeral Home, 2666, Windsor Street, Halifax, on Sunday, June 22 from 7-9 p.m. and Monday, June 23, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. The funeral service will be held on Tuesday, June 24 in Edgewood United Church at the corner of Young Street and Connaught Avenue at 2 p.m. Rev. Diane MacVicar officiating, a reception will be held immediately following the service in the church hall. A private family burial will be held later in Fairview Lawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to QEII Palliative Care Unit or charity of your choice.
