Henry Burns Macdonald

PICTOU – Henry Burns MacDonald, 94 of Prince Street, Pictou, died September 9, 2008 in the Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow. Born on the family farm in Sylvester, he was a son of the late Daniel and Isabella (Maxwell) MacDonald. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. He attended Pictou Academy, where he excelled in sports. He was a graduate of the dairy course at the Ontario Agricultural College in Guelph in 1939, becoming a butter and ice cream maker at PICODA in Stellarton and Gloucester Milk Products in Bathurst, N.B. He joined the federal department of agriculture in 1952 as a dairy produce grader, and worked out of offices in New Glasgow, Sydney, and Truro in a 26 year career that saw him inspect creameries, retail outlets, and institutions across the province. His love of sports was instilled in him at an early age, first as a softball player in local Pictou County leagues and later as a fervent fan of the Toronto Blue Jays. Retiring to Pictou in 1977, he took up the game of golf and played his last game in 2003 on his 90th birthday. He was an impassioned gardener, growing both flowers and vegetables, and again won ribbons for his prized dahlias last week at the Pictou North Colchester Exhibition. An avid card player, he preferred cribbage, but was equally competitive at auction 45’s. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Pictou and Pictou Community New Horizons 50 Plus Club. He is survived by Margaret Carolyn (Archibald), his wife of 65 years; sons, Don, Halifax; Bob (Jenny), Bible Hill and grandsons: Dan, Tim, and Sam; several nieces, nephews, and sisters in-law. Besides his parents he was predeceased by five brothers: William, James, Rev. Dr. Donald, Rev. Joseph and Dr. Prof Allister. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held at 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday and funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday both in the McLaren Funeral Home, Pictou with Rev Iona MacLean officiating, assisted by Rev. Priscilla Anderson. Interment will be in the Alma Cemetery. No flowers by request. Donations in his memory may be made to the Pictou VON, Pictou Community New Horizons 50 Plus Club, or a charity of choice.
