J. Murray Maccara

PLAINFIELD – John Murray MacCara, 93, of Plainfield, Pictou County, passed away peacefully in the Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow on December 24, 2008. Born in Plainfield, he was a son of the late Graham MacCara and Mary (MacKay) (MacCara) Graham. Together with Jean Ross McCara and family, he is survived by sons, Ian (Norma Cock) and Donn; daughters, Mary (David Reid), and Shirley (Andrew Douglas); grandchildren: Kelti MacCara (David Seaby), Kori MacCara, Barton MacCara, Elizabeth Reid, James Reid, Anna-Jean Reid, Emma Reid, Tobias Douglas, Stephen Douglas, Gavin Douglas; great-grandchildren, Janna and Emily Seaby. He is also survived by his brothers, Garnet, Eldon, and Gordon; nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Anne (Ferguson) MacCara; brother, Forbes; sisters, Jean Elliott Ferguson, and Kathleen Higgins; nieces, Marlene Elliott, and Lynn (Monroe) West. A respected member of the community and Elder of Scotsburn United Church, he worked as a woodsman, miner, farmer, and carpenter. Always proud of his farm machinery, he did custom ploughing and baling. In later years he enjoyed working in his well-equipped workshop, where he produced more than 75 grandfather clocks, and literally hundreds of tables, chests, and other pieces of furniture, which are proudly displayed throughout North America. During his lifetime he served as a member of the Pictou County Municipal School Board while the first rural high schools were being built, and was President/Director of Scotsburn Co-operative Services during its period of rapid expansion. He was also a director of the Farmers’ Mutual Insurance Company. Visitation will be held 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Saturday in McLaren Funeral Home, Pictou. Funeral service will take place 2 p.m. Sunday from Scotsburn United Church, with Mary MacDermid officiating. Burial will be in Bethel Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to Scotsburn United Church, or the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia would be appreciated. Special thanks for the wonderful care of the paramedics, ER and ICU staff of the Aberdeen Hospital, and Dr. Imran Hack, and our minister, Mary MacDermid.
