John William Laughlin Fox

TORONTO/ABERCROMBIE -%C2%A0John William Laughlin Fox passed away suddenly at home on Thursday, June 28, in Toronto, Ontario. He was a son of the late Bradford and Donelda (Mitchell) Fox of Abercrombie. He began life in Trenton, Nova Scotia, attending Diamond Street Elementary School. He also attended Sunday School at Trenton United Church. In 1962, the Fox family moved to Abercrombie. John had an enthusiastic love of sports. In school, he was an excellent and competitive student. He graduated from West Pictou District High School in 1973. In 1975, he graduated from the Pictou Regional Vocational School with diplomas in both Machine Shop and Drafting. During these formative years, John also served in 'A' Coy First Battalion Nova Scotia Highlanders attaining the rank of Corporal at a time when corporal was King. He moved to Halifax to begin his apprenticeship as a fitter at HMC Dockyard and developed a career as a polymath artificer. In addition, he received a Diploma in Teaching from the University of New Brunswick. Leadership skills led to final employment as a millwright consultant and a lead hand for Torbear Construction, Ltd. in the Pearson Airport Reconstruction Project. John was known widely as a man who could get the job done. He was a passionate promoter of the construction and mechanical trades and personnel involved. John never missed a day of school and he always did his homework. In later life, he was known to show up at his workplace two days after one of his open heart surgeries. John was of resolute character who now is at peace. John is survived by his loving and devoted companion, Alicja Pfeil, her children Janet and Dariusz, Toronto; brothers Brent (Geraldine), Kentville; Robert (Cathy), Truro; sisters Betsy (Ian),Trenton; Elayne (Bayan) Oweida, Halifax; Dorothy (Radoslav Markovic), Toronto; and youngest brother Fred (Jacqueline), New Glasgow. John was also uncle to seven nieces and nephews who he admired. Visitation 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Monday in the R.H. Porter Funeral Home New Glasgow. Funeral service 2 p.m. Tuesday in First United Church, Trenton, with Rev. Debra Orton officiating. Donations in his memory may be made to the N.S. Heart and Stroke Foundation or a charity of choice.
