MARCEAU, MARGARET At the Grand Falls Manor, April 29, 2004, Mrs. Margaret Marceau of Grand Falls passed away at the age of 77 years. She was the wife of Patrice Marceau. Born on Heron Island in 1926, she was a daughter of the late Gilbert and Pauline (Whitten) Cunningham. Margaret graduated from Fredericton High in 1944. She then persued higher education at the University of New Brunswick, graduating with a B.A. degree in 1948, with honours in English and History. She next went on to study at McGill University in Montreal, where she spent a year and two summers majoring in geography. Following this, Margaret was awarded a Beaverbrook Overseas Scholarship and subsequently spent two years studying at the London School of Economics and Political Science, receiving an M.A. degree. Returning to Canada in 1953, Margaret then accepted employment with the government in Ottawa with the Geographical Branch. In 1955 she married Patrice Marceau and they took up residence in Baie de la Trinite, P.Q. From there they moved to Matane, P.Q. and then to Grand Falls in 1958, where she and her husband have resided ever since. Since taking residence in Grand Falls, Margaret has always shown a keen interest in community affairs, having been a member of the I.O.D.E; the Grand Falls Literary Club; local chapter of the C.W.L.; New Brunswick Museums Association; Falls & Gorge Commission and the Grand Falls Historical Society. She was also one of the principal organizers of the Grand Falls Museum. On September 29, 1978, Margaret received a communications Award for her weekly Column in The Cataract Weekly. She was predeceased by a son, Michel Sylvain, two brothers David and Gilbert, one sister, Ruth. She is survived by five daughters, Anne (Michael Burzynski) of Rocky Harbour Nfld., Debra (Ken Craig) of Quispamsis (Debra's sister Diane Tremblay, Mississauga Ont), Juliette (Robert McLeod) of Sackville, Diane (Rino Levesque) of Saint-André and Sylvie (Alexandre Bureau) of Lethridge Alb., five sons, Etienne (Chantal) of Grand Falls, Julien of Woodstock, Daniel (Lorraine) of Oshawa, Ont., Gabriel of Boston and Medgar of Chicago, ten grandchildren, two great grandchildren, one sister, Pauline Cunningham of Fredericton, one sister-in-law Thelma Cunningham of Ontario, as well as nieces and nephews. Her funeral was held on Saturday, May 1st at 11:00 a.m. from the Assumption Roman Catholic Church, with father Curtis Sappier officiating. Interment was held in the parish cemetery. The pallbearers were, Julien, Etienne, Medgar and Daniel Marceau, Michael Burzynski and Alexendre Bureau, and two Honorary pallbearers, Rino Levesque and Ken Craig.
