Margaret Ellen Baxter

WESTVILLE – It is with much sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, Margaret Ellen Baxter, Cowan Street, Westville. Born in New Waterford to the late Ralph and Ellen (Nellie) MacGillivary, Margaret grew up in Florence and trained as a nurse at Sydney City Hospital. She worked for many years at Harbourview Hospital, Sydney Mines, as an Operating Room supervisor. She moved to Westville in 1975 and returned to her love of nursing at the Sutherland-Harris Memorial Hospital, Pictou, from which she later retired. Through the years she served as a CGIT leader, a member of the Board of Stewards and Sunday School superintendent at St. Columba United Church in Leitches Creek, a CGIT leader, an usher, an elder at St. Paul United Church in Westville, and a former 4-H Leader with the Abercrombie 4-H Club. Margaret was predeceased by her husband, James Ferguson Baxter; brother, Donald and many aunts and uncles. She is survived by her children: Deborah (Wayne) MacCulloch, Ottawa; James (Audrey) Baxter, Bridgeville; Helen (Tim) MacLeod, Fort McMurray; Janice (Stephen) Gouthro, Westville; Glenn (Jenn) Baxter, Lansdowne; her brother, Ralph (Audrey) McGillivary, Riverview; and grandchildren: Jennifer, Lauren, Melinda, Jimmy, Donald, Beth, Phillip, Sarah, Andrew, Shannon, Matthew and Kaylin; great-grandchildren, Martin and Maddox. She was fondly referred to as "Nana Baxter" by many others. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held in Eagles Funeral Home, Westville, on Saturday, June 2 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Public funeral service will be held in St. Paul United Church, Westville, Sunday, June 3, at 2 p.m. with Rev. Douglas Pilsworth officiating. A private family committal will take place in Sydney Mines at a later date. Donations in her memory may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, the Palliative Care Unit of the Aberdeen Hospital, or a charity of one’s choice.
