EUREKA - Murray Donald Holley, 84, of Eureka, Pictou Co., passed away in the Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow, January 5, 2007. Born in Eureka, he was a son of the late Truman and Sadie (MacKay) Holley. Murray served overseas during World War II and was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #75, Eureka, the Overseas War Veterans Association and the Legion Choir. He was an adherent of the former Wesley United Church, Eureka, and currently of St. Columba United Church, Hopewell. Murray worked at various jobs during his lifetime having been a farm worker, butcher, store owner, construction worker and taxi and truck driver. He retired in 1987 as a bus driver with the Pictou District School Board. For the past several years, he enjoyed one last business venture selling cranberries and became known to his many customers as the "Cranberry Man". Murray told wonderful stories about his experiences and especially cherished the people he met across the country and province, many of whom had remained lifelong friends. Murray embraced life with remarkable zest and energy and lived each day to its fullest. There was always the next "project" to plan, another dream to make come true, or a time to spend doing the many things he enjoyed, taking pictures, picking berries, growing flowers, playing cards, especially cribbage and watching the hockey games always cheering for the Maple Leafs. Murray was an active Legion member and liked to attend veterans events and appear on their float in parades. His love of Holland and the Dutch people began during the war years and continued all of his life. The windmill in his yard, built during the 1950's was a well known landmark. Murray had a great love of music, whether singing the old hymns of his childhood or giving an impromptu stepdance performance. He especially loved Cape Breton fiddle music and the sound of the bagpipes. The wonderful celebrations he planned to honor family and friends brought him much personal happiness. Murray's beautiful smile, his winning personality, his kind and generous spirit and his lifelong involvement in the community he loved will be greatly missed. Surviving are his wife, the former Gladys (Clark) MacIntosh; daughters: Catherine (Bill) Haslam, White Hill Road; Margaret (Robert) Porter, Greenhill; Maureen (Ed) Crane, Fairview; step-daughter, Judy (Steven) MacLeod, Lethbridge, AB; step-sons: Kevin (Crystal) MacIntosh, Riverton; Paul MacIntosh, New Jersey; Bob (Marie) Richards, Florida; nine grandchildren, eight step-grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, two step-great-grandchildren; sister, Elsie Taylor, Riverton; brother-in-law, Freeman Taylor, Westville; sister-in-law, Ethola Holley, Stellarton; several nieces and nephews. Murray was predeceased by his first wife, Shirley Margaret (Proudfoot) Holley; sisters: Ena Reid, Jean MacAskill, Evelyn Holley Wong; brothers: Everett "Hod", Ray, John "Jack". Visitation will be from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. today, Jan 6, 2007, in the H.C. MacQuarrie Funeral Home, Stellarton. Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 7, 2007 from St. Columba United Church, Hopewell, with Pastor Michael Simmons officiating. Burial will be in Riverton Cemetery. Donations in memory of Murray may be made to the Aberdeen Palliative Care Society, the Veterans Comfort Fund, Veterans Wing of the Sutherland Harris Hospital, Pictou, or to a charity of one's choice.
