Rev. Ronald. T. Sabine, Sr. 91, died peacefully Wednesday afternoon, June 11, 2008, surrounded by members of his loving family. With his wife by his side, Rev. Sabine ministered to his congregations, taught school for more than 50 years and was active in local and civic affairs. He was dedicated in his drive, integrity and caring for parishioners, students and community. He was married to the late Lulia "Lu" Bessie (Ryder) Sabine for 59 years, who predeceased him in 2004. He is survived by his son, Ronald T. Jr. and his wife Linda of Moncton; three daughters, Elizabeth L. Sabine of Calais, VT, Cheryl A. Ross and her husband Gregory of Brampton, ON, and Pamela L. Sabine and her husband Gary Racine of Salisbury. He also leaves his grandchildren: Ronald T. III and Sarah L. Sabine, Paul T. "PJ" and Trevor B. Reinhardt, Brian J.T. and Lindsay P. Ross. His two brothers, John F. and Rev. Ralph L. Sabine predeceased him. He is survived by their wives, Winifred Sabine of Perth-Andover and Mary Sabine of Somersworth, NH. He loved and was deeply loved by his family. We honor and miss you this Father's Day. Born in Port Maitland, NS, he was the son of the late Rev. Leonard T. and Laura F. (Boyd) Sabine. He attended a number of grammar schools as his father moved throughout the Maritimes and Maine as a minister. A graduate of Fredericton High School, he went on to receive his teacher certification from the Provincial Normal School (1935). He graduated from Eastern Nazarene College (Boston, MA) receiving his B.A. (1943) and B.Th. (1944) degrees. In 1945, he and his brother Ralph were both ordained as ministers at Beulah Camp, with the honor of having their father perform the ordination. Later, when two daughters were attending college, he graduated from McGill University earning his B.Divinity degree (1966). In 1974 he earned his B.Ed. degree from the University of Moncton. He began teaching in the rural Woodstock area and his first rural church was the Reformed Baptist Church in Salem, Killam's Mills, NB circuit, where he also taught grades 1-9 in a one-room schoolhouse. It was in Salem, where he met and married his wife Lu on January 29, 1945. His next assignment was the Havelock RB Church, NS, followed by the Seal Cove RB Church in Seal Cove, Grand Manan, NB. Rev. Sabine transferred to the Church of the Nazarene denomination in Trenton, NS. He was a high school teacher/vice principal in Brookfield, NS; Three Rivers, Quebec City, McMasterville, and Longueuil, QC. He served Methodist Churches in the Whitefield Parish, NH, Bradford Parish and Plainfield Parish, VT, and Granville Parish, NY. He returned to the Maritimes teaching in Hillsborough and at the time of his retirement he was a teacher at Harrison Trimble High School, Moncton, NB. During these latter years as a minister of the United Church of Canada, he served churches in Alma, West River, Hopewell Hill, Riverside-Albert and Hillsborough, NB. During his tenure as a minister, he combined teaching with ministerial duties and served the Conference in capacities of College Board, Home Mission Board, Statistician, Youth President and President of Ministerial Associations. He was recommended to Who’s Who in Religion in America. He served in the Gideons and Rotary Clubs. He was an officer in the Cadet Services of Canada, served as a Cub master and Scoutmaster, played collegiate hockey and basketball, coached high school hockey, and was a political activist. He and his wife Lu sang musical duets in their churches. His avocations included music, playing hockey, genealogy, reading, golfing, and he was a lifelong "sports enthusiast".
