Rev. Roy Herbert Mackenzie

MacKenzie, Rev. Roy Herbert, B.A.,B.Th.,B.Ed.,M.Div.,Dip.Gerontology, age 89, of Saint Vincent’s Nursing Home, Halifax and formerly of Dartmouth, passed away, Sunday, August 3, 2008, in the Home. Born in Trenton, he was a son of the late Alexander and Annie (Connors) MacKenzie. A graduate of New Glasgow High School, he attended Mount Allison University, Pine Hill Divinity Hall, Mount St. Vincent University and the Bangor Theological Seminary. Rev. MacKenzie was licensed to preach by the Pictou Presbytery and ordained by the Maritime Conference in August 1944 in St. Matthew’s United Church, Halifax. Roy served mission fields in Cape Breton and Saskatchewan, and pastoral charges in Bayfield-Cape Tormentine, N.B.; Scotsburn-Lyon’s Brook, Pictou Co.; and Grace United Church in Dartmouth, N.S., where he served from 1957-1972. He taught History, Geography and English Literature at a Junior High School in Dartmouth from 1972-1980, while serving part-time as a Hospital Chaplain at Camp Hill. Rev. MacKenzie retired in 1984 and continued serving as one of the part-time chaplains at Camp Hill until September 1990. He was an Honorary Assistant Minister and member of the male Kilted Choir of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church in Dartmouth. He always actively served in both the church and community. Among offices he held were: Statistical Secretary of the former Moncton Presbytery; Past Chairman of Pictou and Halifax Presbyteries; Statistical Secretary of Halifax Presbytery; past member of the Conference Settlement Committee; Commissioner to the 1956 General Council in Windsor, Ont.; past member of the Halifax-Dartmouth Council of Churches; past President of the Dartmouth and area Ministerial Association; and as a member of various Presbytery committees. He served as a Reserve Naval Chaplain from 1960-1978, and as an officiating Clergyman attached to H.M.C.S. Stadacona. He was a past member of the Dartmouth branch of the C.M.H. Association; a past President of the Dartmouth branch of the C.A.R.S. Society; a District Grand Chaplain of the Grand Lodge of Nova Scotia A.F. & A.M.; a past Patron of the Order of the Eastern Star ; a past director of the Bluenose Credit Union; past Executive member of the N.S. District of the Canadian Bible Society; and served for nine years as a hockey coach in the Dartmouth Minor Hockey Association. He was a past Director of the Dartmouth Homemakers Board and a member of both the Institute of Pastoral Training and the Canadian Association for Pastoral Education. He is survived by his wife, the former Lola S. Fraser; sons, Graeme, Dartmouth; Dr. Brian, Copenhagen, Denmark; granddaughter, Jessica; sister, June (Art) Eaton, Stellarton. He was predeceased by sister, Joyce MacNeil and brother, John. Visitation 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Wednesday in the R.H. Porter Funeral Home New Glasgow. Funeral service 11 a.m. Thursday in First Presbyterian Church New Glasgow with Rev. Dr. P.A. “Sandy” MacDonald and Rev. Dr. Glen Matheson officiating. Burial will be in Heatherdale Memorial Gardens. A memorial service will also be held at 6:30 p.m. Friday in St. Andrews Presbyterian Church Dartmouth with Rev. Dr. P.A. “Sandy” MacDonald officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society.
