Dr. Vernon J. Snelgrove

Passed peacefully away at Carbonear General Hospital on June 15, 2008 at 75 years of age. A retired professor of education at Memorial University, he leaves to mourn, daughter Teri Snelgrove (Brian Nicol) in Vancouver, son Dr. Paul Snelgrove (Dr. Michele DuRand) in Torbay, and their mother Rose Lee Snelgrove in St. John's. Vern was the eldest of 11 children of the late Wesley and Daisy Snelgrove of Grates Cove and is survived by his brothers and sisters: Doris (Ernie), Melbourne, June (Walter) Snow, Maisie (Brooks) Adey, Charles (Marilyn), Georgiana (Carson) Lambert, Phyllis (Dominic) Johnson, Melvin (Marie), Roland (Dr. Christine), Bill (Vivian), Rose Lee (Dr. Joe) Boudreau, and many nieces and nephews. Vern graduated from Memorial University in 1957 and obtained a Master's Degree in Education from the University of Alberta in 1965 and a PH.D from The Ohio State University in 1971. He then returned to Newfoundland with his family to accept a faculty position at Memorial, where he taught until his retirement in 1993. He has a broad legacy of students from his days as a teacher and principal in St. John's, Port-aux-Basques, and Labrador City, and from his years as a professor at Memorial. Since 2006 he resided at Callingwood Downs in Clarke's Beach. The family will receive visitors at Barrett's Funeral Home, 328 Hamilton Avenue ,on Friday, June 20 from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. A Memorial Service will take place at 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 21 from Barrett's Chapel. Interment will follow at a later date at the United Church Cemetery in Grates Cove. Donations in his memory may be made to the Wesley and Daisy Memorial Scholarship Fund at Memorial University or to Grates Cove United Church.
