AITON, HOWARD PAUL April 14, 1913 - July 15, 2005 Howard Paul Aiton of Hartland, NB and Cape Canaveral, Florida, husband of Hyla Marion (Bowlby) Aiton, died on July 15, 2005 at the Central Carleton Nursing Home in Hartland after a period of failing health. He was born in Hartland, the eldest of three sons of the late Frank Andrew Aiton and Janet Myrtle (McMullin) Aiton. He attended school in Hartland and later graduated from Horton Academy in Wolfville, NS. After studying at Acadia University, he joined the Royal Canadian Regiment of the Canadian Army and served in various posts until his discharge with the rank of Lance Corporal in 1937. In August of 1939 he enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force. He trained at numerous locations in Canada and sailed for England from New York on the Queen Elizabeth in March, 1943. He was posted to a Canadian Bomber Group (Bluenose Squadron 434) as a rear gunner. He flew 25 night and 8 daylight operations over enemy territory and came under enemy fire on numerous occasions. Following a crash landing on a training flight, he returned to Canada in late 1944. After the war, he and his wife lived in Boston until 1949 when they purchased a tourist business in Auburn, NS which they operated until they moved to Florida in the late 1950's. In recent years Howard spent summers in Hartland until ill health made it impossible for him to return to Florida. He is survived by his wife, Hyla, a son Donald Paul of Hartland and Cape Canaveral, a granddaughter, Kristen, a brother Harold F. Aiton (Irma) of Woodstock, nephews D. Hayward Aiton (Linda) of Westfield, John Aiton (Linda) of Woodstock, nieces Janet Taylor (Bob) of Fort St. John, BC and Sandra Aiton of Woodstock. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brother, Donald S. Aiton and sister-inlaw, Margaret (Hayward) Aiton of Hartland, and niece Karen Aiton of Fredericton. A Legion service was held on July 17th. The funeral service was held on July 18th at the Holy Trinity Anglican Church with the Reverend Christopher Hayes officiating. Pallbearers were D. Hayward Aiton, Kriss Aiton, John Aiton, Cecil Shaw, Ross Belyea, and Ralph Walsh. Soloist was Mrs. Audrey Brooks and the organist was Leonard Orser. The family wishes to acknowledge Mrs. Gwen Cullins-Jones and the staff of the Central Carleton Nursing Home for the excellent care Howard received over the past several years; thank you to Rev. Chris Hayes for his many visits to Howard. We also thank the members of the Hartland Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion and special gratitude and heartfelt thanks is extended to Beverley and Ralph Walsh for their love, compassion and caring shown to Howard during his illness.
