MCNEILLY, RUSSELL ANDREW The passing of Russell Andrew McNeilly age 72 of Fredericton occurred at the York Manor Nursing Home on August 17th 2005. Born in Trinidad he was the son of Louise (Barker) & the late Jeffrey McNeilly. He taught at the University of New Brunswick from 1967 to 1996 also teaching in Trinidad, prior to coming to Canada. Studied at McGill University, Sir George Williams University and the University of Toronto & the University of London, England. Russell was Dean of Students at the University of West Indies in St. Augustine, Trinidad. He was the recipient of the NB Human Rights award 2004 & received the Governor General's award for volunteerism in the community in 1992. He was a long time member of St. Paul's United Church, very actively involved in many areas as well as a lay reader throughout the St. John River Valley. Russell started the Learning Disabilities Association in the Province of New Brunswick & also the Gifted Association. He Co-founded the Atlantic Human Rights Association, served as President of the Multicultural Association & chair of Woolastook Presbytery of the United Church of Canada. Survived by his Wife Sandra (Braid) McNeilly two children Katharine Hartnett (D.J) of Burton & Gordon McNeilly (Eireann) of Charlottetown. Three grandchildren Riley & Amelia Hartnett & Kiera McNeilly, his mother Louise, two sisters Gloria DeSouza of Trinidad, Erna Medina (Alexis) of Palm Bay Florida, seven brothers, Will of Toronto, Harry (wife Roslyn) of Vancouver, Gerry wife (Sheila) of Winnipeg, Pat of Scarborough, Kirt wife (Paula) of Scarborough, Chris wife (Karen) of Toronto & Ronnie of Trinidad. Many nieces & nephews. Predeceased by two sisters Vera Stewart & Lydia Wilford one brother Lance McNeilly. The family will receive friends on Sunday from 7-9 PM at Bishop's Funeral Home 540 Woodstock Road. Funeral Service will be held on Monday August 22nd at St. Paul's United Church at 2 PM with Rev. Dr. David Fisher officiating assisted by Rev. Peter Somerville. Reception to follow in the Church Hall.Many many thanks to the incredible staff of the Atrium at York Manor who took such phenomenal care of Russell for the last 20 months of his life .
