SWEENEY, ROBERT DEVERNIT The death of Robert Devernit Sweeney, of Durham Bridge, NB, husband of the late, Amelia (Dale) Sweeney, occurred on September 29, 2005 at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Regional Hospital. Born in Durham Bridge on September 18, 1918, he was a son of the late Andrew and Lillian (Banks) Sweeney. Robert was a member of St. Peter's Anglican Church, a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch #80. He served in the army, in the Carleton York Infantry Regiment, from September 4, 1939 to June 9, 1945. He also served overseas in England, Sicily and Italy. Robert was very active in his community. He is survived by one daughter, Barbara Munn (Maurice); two sons, Vernon Sweeney (Sherry) and Thomas Sweeney all of Durham Bridge, NB; two grandchildren, Berton James MacLean and Belinda B. MacLean (Carman Sangster and his son Colton); great-grandson, Brett Miller; one sister, Rita Vinneau of Barrie, ON; one brother, George Sweeney (Carol Estey) of Durham Bridge; three sisters-in-law, Pearl and Ethel of Durham Bridge, NB and Phyllis of BC; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife and parents, he is predeceased by two sisters, Margaret Keasey and Mary Munn; and five brothers, John, Irvine, Dennis, Herman and Fred Sweeney. Visitation will take place at York Funeral Home, 302 Brookside Drive, on Friday from 7 to 9 pm and Saturday from 2 to 4 pm and 7 to 9 pm. Members of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch # 80 are asked to assemble at York Funeral Home on Saturday at 7 pm for a Legion Tribute Service. A Funeral Service will be held on Sunday, October 2, 2005 at 2 pm from York Funeral Home's T. Gordon MacLeod Memorial Chapel with Rev. John Cathcart officiating. Interment will take place at the Upper Durham Memorial Cemetery, Durham, NB at a later date. For those who wish, remembrances made to the New Brunswick Heart and Stroke Foundation, the New Brunswick Kidney Foundation or to the charity of the donor's choice would be appreciated by the family.
