With his wife and children at his side, H. Myles Furlong, age 85 years, passed peacefully away on Monday, June 16, 2008, at the L.A. Miller Centre in St. John's. Mourned by his wife of 55 years, Constance Furlong (Carew); children: Anne, Christine (Myles), Bill (Erin) and Jordan (Joan); grandchildren: Evan, Caroline, Madeline, Niall, Aidan, Robert, Eileen, Claire and Thomas; loving family members and long time friends. Renowned in his youth as an extraordinary athlete and fearsome competitor on the ice, in the field and on the pond, Myles went on to earn widespread admiration for acumen, stewardship and integrity during his 25-year career as Business Manager of the Roman Catholic School Board of St. John's, He was a man of a myriad of talents who could renovate a basement or garage, describe the contours of a bay or cove, and quote G.K. Chesterton or Gilbert and Sullivan from memory. He was a man of deep and intense Catholic faith who was also immensely proud to be from Newfoundland, the island that he always called his country. But above all, Myles loved and cherished his family, and in return was loved and cherished by his wife, children and grandchildren, and who was accorded universal respect within his community. Resting at Caul's Funeral Home, LeMarchant Road from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday, June 18 and 10 a.m. to noon, 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Thursday, June 19. Funeral Mass to take place at 9:30 a.m. on Friday, June 20, 2008 at the Basilica of St. John the Baptist Church, with internment to follow at Belvedere Cemetery. Flowers gratefully accepted, or donations in his memory may be made to the Palliative Care Unit at the L.A. Miller Centre in St. John's. May his soul rest in peace.
