Mabel (Hamill) Smith Ann Anna

Born: March 23rd, 1919

Passed on: April 5th, 2008

Mabel (Hamill) Smith Ann passed away peacefully on April 5, 2008 at Pioneers Lodge in Moose Jaw where she had been a resident for almost three years. She had struggled for the past five years as her physical and mental abilities diminished. Deeply saddened by her death, we rejoice that her spirit is free and celebrate her wonderful life. Ann was born in her Aunt's house on March 23, 1919 in the Quincy District south of Moose Jaw. Her family moved to the Mayberry District in 1925 and Ann attended Capitol School. Her father died when she was 9 years old, but her mother managed to send her to Central Collegiate and Normal School in Moose Jaw. Ann taught school at Congress, Boharm, Lestock and was the last teacher at Quincy before it closed in 1941. The next year she went to Ottawa to work for the government as a statistical clerk before being transferred back to a Moose Jaw office where she worked until she was married. Ann married Ab Smith in 1945, and they moved from Moose Jaw to a farm in the Quincy District in 1953 with their two children, Jim and Janis. They were both very active members of the community. Ann kept neat records for the Red Lake Rural Telephone Company for 16 years, was a member of the Quincy Ladies Aid, and a United Church supporter. She enjoyed gardening, playing cards, curling, cooking, shopping and playing with her grandchildren. In 1988 Ab and Ann retired to Moose Jaw until Ab died in 1993. Ann lived in a condo for about 10 years before she needed to move to the Bentley, Ina Grafton Gage, and finally Pioneer Lodge. She will be sorely missed by her son, Jim (Gloria) of Moose Jaw, grandson, Calvin (Janna), great-grandchildren, Dexter, Carter and Austin; grandson, Trevor ( Krista), great-grandchildren: Rylan, Logan and Alexandra, and grandson, Curtis; daughter Janis Leia (Carlyle)of Prince Albert, grandchildren, Jayme, Caylin and Robyn, great-grandchildren, Thomas and Sebastian. Ann was predeceased by her parents, Chris and Tina Hamill, husband, Ab, brother, Jim Hamill and sister, Evelyn Barber. Sincere appreciation and thanks to the care givers and staff at Pioneer Lodge who were so patient and kind to Ann. A Celebration of Ann's life will be held at W.J.Jones & Son Chapel on Thursday April 10, 2008 at 10:30 am. Della Ferguson will officiate. Memorialization will take place at Sunset Cemetery. In living memory of Ann, a tree will be planted in Besant Park by W. J. Jones & Son Funeral Home. Please sign the memorial register book at website: www.wjjonesandson.com (Obituaries).
