Passed on: May 19th, 2008

Friedt Sister Justine scsl May 2, 1918 – May 19, 2008 Sister Justine Friedt died suddenly and peacefully at the Foothills Medical Centre on Monday, May 19, 2008 at the age of 90 years. She entered the Congregation of the Sisters of Charity of St. Louis in Levi PQ in 1939, professed her religious vows in 1942, and returned to Western Canada to begin her ministry as a homemaker in boarding schools and convents. Sr. Justine served diligently and generously in Swift Current, Moose Jaw, Wilcox, Radville SK, Burnaby BC, Medicine Hat and Calgary, AB., until 1992 at which time she took up permanent residence at St. John's Senior Care Home in Calgary. Sr. Justine will be remembered for her deep faith, creativity, cooking skills and beautiful handicrafts. Her love for life was obvious in her love for children, her skill in nurturing plants and flowers and the beautiful cakes and delicious baking that she generously shared with family and friends. In this age of environmental concern she recycled hundreds of greeting cards, collecting and remodelling them for re-gifting. In the early years of her retirement Justine often helped families by providing child care and helping with homemaking. When Elizabeth House was established Sr. Justine became their unofficial fund raiser, selling crafts, cards and knitting at various Church socials and craft sales. Most recently she 'adopted' the women and men served at CUPS to be recipients of her prayerfully knitted toques and scarves. Justine will be lovingly remembered by the members of her religious community, her sister Josie Gronning, her brother Lee (Marguerite) Friedt and numerous cousins, nephews and nieces and the many children she cared for who lovingly call her 'Grandma Justine'. Sister Justine (Regina) was predeceased by her parents Ralph and Justina Friedt, her brother Joseph and her sisters Barbara (John) Quinlan and Kay (Ted) Clarkson. The Sisters of Charity of St. Louise offer sincere and deep gratitude to the staff at St. John's Senior Care Home for the attentive and compassionate care they gave to Justine throughout the past years. Relatives and friends are invited to Prayers and Tributes at St. John's Senior Care Home Chapel (409 – 10A Street NW) Thursday, May 22, 2008 at 7:00 p.m. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Joseph's Catholic Church (640 - 19 Avenue NW) on Friday, May 23, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. Graveside service will follow in St. Joseph's Section, Queen's Park Cemetery. Lillian was predeceased by her husband of 62 years, John, her parents Thomas and Minnie Hindley, as well as her brother, Tom Hindley and her sister, Irene Buchan. She is survived by her daughter Linda and son-in-law Paul McKeen, two grandchildren Heather McKeen-Edwards (and her husband John) and Brendan McKeen. She is also survived by brother-in-law, Ernie Buchan, nieces Joan (Bruce McPhee) and Diane Buchan, as well as numerous great and great-great nieces and nephews. Lillian was born in Moose Jaw, SK and lived her entire life in Moose Jaw until 2007 when she moved to Coteau Range Manor in Avonlea in order to stay with her husband John. After John's death, Lillian moved to Winnipeg to be closer to her family. We were so glad to be able to see Mom often and spend time with her in those final months. Lillian was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She was a full-time homemaker and also worked part-time at Sears for several years. She was an avid sportswoman. As a young woman, she played basketball, baseball and badminton. In later years, she golfed, bowled and curled, enjoying many successes including a senior ladies provincial curling championship. She enjoyed her garden, sewing, knitting and playing cards (at which she was especially lucky) and she was fortunate to meet some fellow card players at her new home in Winnipeg. Lillian was very proud of her 2 grandchildren and was always eager to spend time with them and revel in their accomplishments. She was our role model for handling life's setbacks. She never had complaints; only common sense, determination and perseverance until the problem was resolved. We would like to express our appreciation to the staff at both Coteau Range Manor in Avonlea and Thorvaldson Care Centre in Winnipeg for making Lillian's last year comfortable in their very caring environments. Cremation has taken place and no formal memorial service will be held at this time. There will be a private service held at a later date where Lillian and John will be interred together. Friends, so wishing, may make donations in Lillian's memory to the Alzheimers Society of Saskatchewan at 301-2550 12th Avenue, Regina, SK S4P 3X1.Arrangements entrusted to Thompson in the Park Funeral Home, Winnipeg, in conjunction with Parkview Funeral Chapel, Moose Jaw.
