ANN JOHNSTON
JOHNSTON, ANN Our precious mum, Ann Johnston, died on July 23, 2006 in Fredericton, NB. Predeceased by husband, Jack in 2004, her own parents, Andrew and Nan Biles, brothers Andrew, Alastair and Jock, her first husband, Ralph Lawrence, and infant sons, John and Andrew. She is survived by daughter, Sandra (Mel) Pond, sons Keith (Leanne) and Blair (Kim), and grandchildren, Melissa and Melanie Pond, Nancy, Andrew, Rachel, Erin and Meg Johnston. Ann was born on December 8, 1922 near Glasgow, Scotland She was a teenager when war began in 1939. She went into service, first as an ambulance driver, and later as a nurse in a naval hospital in Mearnskirk. It was there she met her first husband, Ralph who was Lt. Commander on HMCS Athabascan. They married in April, 1944 and he was lost days later when the ship was torpedoed and sunk off the French coast. She met Jack first in Scotland, and again in 1946 when she traveled to Halifax for the launching of the second Athabascan. They married in 1947, living initially in Fredericton while Jack completed his Forestry degree at UNB. In 1948, they moved to Bridgewater, NS where their children were born. In 1965, they returned to Fredericton where Jack accepted a position with the Canadian Forestry Service. Ann was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She always put the interests of her family first. When Jack developed Alzheimer's and had to move to the Veteran's Health Unit. Ann always ensured he was as safe and happy as possible. Despite her own health problems, she never missed a day with him, and always made sure Jack was tucked in and peaceful before heading home herself. Nothing was allowed to interfere with this routine. Ann's life was influenced in many ways by her war experiences. She understood the importance of love and friendship. She connected with people easily and was generous with her love and thoughtfulness. Her life was defined by her will to ensure that she would always be there for her family. She suffered a host of health problems over the years, but never allowed them to defeat her. She will be greatly missed. A memorial service will be held at Gibson Memorial United Church on Tuesday, July 25, 2006, at 6:00 pm, with internment to follow at Forest Hill Cemetery. No visitation.
