RUPERT HAROLD On STOCKER

STOCKER, RUPERT HAROLD On November 5, 2006 at Windsor Court after a short illness in his 96th year Rupert was born in England and educated at Harrow School and the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich. He was commissioned into the Royal Artillery in 1931 and served in Singapore and Hong Kong where he was ADC to the Commanding Officer. Decommissioned in 1937, he travelled to Japan and the United States before returning to England where he became the manager of a group of private hospitals. In 1939 he married Joyce (nee Heywood) and in 1940 he rejoined the British Army and served as an artillery training officer during the Second World War, retiring with the rank of Captain. In 1952 the family emigrated to Newfoundland where he was the administrator of the Western Memorial Hospital, Corner Brook, prior to moving to Fredericton in 1956. He was the last administrator of the Victoria Public Hospital. In 1976 he retired at the time the Chalmers Hospital opened. Rupert was active in establishing a number of organizations including the New Brunswick Hospital Association, Maritime Hospital Association, Fredericton Heritage Trust, Pine Grove Nursing Home and was a founding member of the Grove Foundation. He maintained ties with England as a life time member of the Merchant Taylors' Company and as a Freeman of the City of London. A long term member of the Fredericton Rotary Club, Rupert also served one term as City of Fredericton Councillor representing Garden Creek. He will be remembered fondly by CBC listeners for his comments on Information Morning. He was predeceased by his wife Joyce in 2000 and is survived by his son Martin (Jennifer Prest) of Calgary; daughters Jill (Karl Klarer) of Millbrook, Ontario and Dinah (Greg Legere) of Fredericton; 4 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. Donations in Rupert's memory may be made to the Grove Foundation, 521 Woodstock Rd., Fredericton, NB E3B 2J2 or to the charity of the donor's choice.
