
JACK A. VERMEEREN
VERMEEREN, JACK A., M.D. Jack A. Vermeeren, M.D., 86, of Sandusky, died quietly in his sleep Saturday morning, July 28, 2007, following a brief illness. He was born in Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada, the second of three children born to Dutch immigrants, He was a graduate of the University of New Brunswick, McGill Medical School in Montreal. He was Chief Resident of OB/GYN at John's Hopkins Hospital; there he met his future partner, Frank Leake, M.D. of Sandusky. After family and friends, the practice of medicine was his passion. He was the ultimate caring and complete doctor and surgeon. He began his practice in 1948 in a converted home hospital in Central Saskatchewan, Canada, using ski equipped planes and horse-drawn sleds in the winter. He ended his work using every modern surgical procedure along with his partner of 30 years and best friend, Dr. Leake, with whom he founded the Women's Clinic, now known as the Bayshore Clinic in Sandusky. The two doctors delivered over 3,000 babies in this area. Jack was a true outdoorsman. He loved fly-fishing for salmon and trout in the Maritime Provinces and pike, musky, and artic char in Northern Canada. He skied every year until age 75 in Western North America and Europe. Water fowl hunting with his sons in the marshes of Erie and Ottawa County was always special to him. He is survived by his love of 33 years, Carol Delapp; two sons, Barry (Dixie) Vermeeren, Sandusky, and Larry Vermeeren, Salida, CO; two granddaughters, Kelly and Cassie Vermeeren, Sandusky; his sister, Marguerite (Arnold) Mullin and her family in Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada. He was preceded in death by his wife, Kay (Kathleen) Vermeeren; his parents; and his brother, Charles Vermeeren. Private family services will be held.
