DOUGLAS E. RICE

RICE, DOUGLAS E. Retired Provincial Court Judge Douglas E. Rice died peacefully with family at his side, at York Manor Nursing Home, Fredericton, NB on Sunday, August 26, 2007. Born July 2, 1927 in Petitcodiac, NB to Emerson C. Rice and Mabel D. Rice, he graduated from UNB Law School in 1952 and then joined his father to form the law firm 'Rice & Rice' in Petitcodiac. The family moved to Sackville in 1964. He was appointed to the Provincial Court in 1971 and sat in St. Stephen and Charlotte County for 31 years. One highlight of his career was sitting as a Circuit Court Judge for a period of time in the Arctic. He was secretary/treasurer of the Canadian Association of Provincial Court Judges and went on to become President. Doug was an active member of Kiwanis, Lifeline, the St. Stephen Army Cadets, Minor Hockey and many other organizations in the communities of Petitcodiac, Sackville and St. Stephen. He was the Lt. Governor of Kiwanis; Lt. Col. of the 8th Canadian Hussars (Princess Louise's); received the Queen's Jubilee Medal and a member of the Kirk McColl United Church in St. Stephen, NB. He was the much loved husband for 56 years of Joyce Rice; father of Karen (Gary Miller), Krista (Ralph Allen), Kirk (Janice), and Karla (Marty Beattie); adored grandfather of Jorah, Ross (Michelle), Alana (Dan), Drew, Amy, Kyle, Clark, Emily, Ethan, Oliver, Damian, Dasia and great-grandfather of Emma. He is survived by very special friends Charles & Pauline Howatt and Clarence Hatt, as well as many relatives and friends. Besides his parents, Douglas was predeceased by his sister, Enid Wasson and brother, Dr. Dean Rice. The family would like to thank the nursing home staff of Rita's Retreat, Spencer Nursing Home, ProTem and York Manor Nursing Home for their wonderful care of Doug during his stay with them. We would also like to thank the Alzheimer Society for all of their support. The family invites all of their friends and family to celebrate Doug's life with them. Visitation will take place at York Funeral Home, 302 Brookside Drive, Fredericton, NB on Tuesday, August 28, 2007 from 7-9 pm and Wednesday from 7-9 pm; additional visitation will take place at the Kirk McColl United Church, 70 King Street, St. Stephen, NB on Thursday, August 30 from 11 am until Service time at 2 pm with Rev. Doug Cosman officiating and Rev. Dr. Mark Hatfield and Rev. Greg Geldart assisting. Interment will take place in the Maple Wood Cemetery, Petitcodiac, NB on Friday, August 31, 2007 at 11 am. For those who wish, remembrances made to the Alzheimer Society or to the charity of the donor's choice would be appreciated by the family.
