PAUL B. MADDOX
MADDOX, PAUL B., Q.C. Paul B. Maddox of Woodstock passed away on Tuesday, November 6, 2007 at the Veteran's Health Unit in Fredericton. He was predeceased by his wife of fifty-nine years, Connie (McIntyre) Maddox. Paul was born in Wicklow, NB, on the family farm on August 21, 1919. He was predeceased by his parents, George and Gertrude (Grant) Maddox; his brother, George Maddox; and his sister, Mary Maddox. He is survived by his six children: Dr. Anne-Marie Maddox of Little Rock, Arkansas, Dr. Jean Walters of Victoria, BC, Grace Maddox of Toronto, ON, Jim Maddox (Beth) of Toronto, ON, Connie Maddox-Campbell (Dan) of Fredericton, and Angela Maddox Branscombe (Daryl) of Fredericton; eight grandchildren: Jaymie and Kaitlyn Maddox of Toronto, Shane and Dylan Walters of Toronto, and Mitchell, Christopher, Luke, and Alexa Campbell of Fredericton; his sisters, Gertrude Morris of Ottawa, ON, and Joan Ouellette (Renaud) of Trois Rivi res, QC; his brother, Frank Maddox of Fredericton; and several nieces and nephews. Paul graduated from the Provincial Normal School and taught at various schools prior to enlisting in the Armed Forces (1942 - 1946). He served in the United Kingdom and Europe, being discharged with the rank of Captain. Upon returning to Canada at the end of his service, Paul enrolled at the University of New Brunswick Law School, graduating in 1949. He practiced in Woodstock, beginning a professional career as a lawyer that lasted fifty years. In 1999, he became a life member of the New Brunswick Bar Association. His career included work both as a defense lawyer and as a Crown Prosecutor. He was also regional director for Legal Aid. He received his Queen's Counsel designation in 1972. Paul had a keen interest in business including insurance, a car dealership, and with his love of nature, even a Christmas tree farm. He enjoyed real estate and managed rental properties. Paul was active in the community as a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, the Elks Club, and the Knights of Columbus. He was also a past chairperson of the Board of School Trustees. A life long Liberal, he ran for a federal seat in 1965. Visitation will take place at the Scott Funeral Home, 815 Main Street, Woodstock, on Friday, November 9, 2007 from 5-8 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, November 10, 2007 at 11:00 AM from St. Gertrude's Church, Woodstock. Rev. Bill Brennan will be the Celebrant, with interment to follow in Calvary Cemetery. If desired, remembrances to the Veteran's Health Unit, Fredericton, or to the Alzheimer Society of New Brunswick would be appreciated by the family. www.scottfh.com
