JACQUELINE WATSON - BARR (FRASER)
BARR (FRASER), JACQUELINE WATSON - Timberlea, died on Saturday, December 22, 2007, in the Palliative Care Unit, QEII, Halifax, following a long struggle with cancer and emphysema. Jackie was born in Saint John, N.B., 69 years ago, and was the daughter of the late Don and Ethel (Watson) Fraser. She moved to the family farm in Central Blissville, near Fredericton Junction, when she was nine years old. She quickly became well-known in the area for her beautiful singing voice, and performed at dozens of local weddings under the direction of her music teacher mother. Jackie also appeared as a soloist on various radio stations, and after graduation from high school and business college, moved back to Saint John, where she found work in television, as a model, singer, interviewer and talk show host. After taking time off to start a family, she was soon back in radio and television as a commercial writer and commentator. At one time, CBC Radio ran commercials. Until that idea was dropped, she wrote them with a Fredericton station while filling in for vacationing staff. While in Fredericton, she became a licensed lay reader in the Fredericton Anglican Diocese. In 1974, Jackie and family moved to Halifax, where she continued her interest in the church and became a lay reader in the Diocese of Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island. This soon led to full-time work with the Diocese from which she retired after 22 years service. Her proudest moment was when she graduated summa cum laude from Saint Mary's University at age 53, winning the governor general's medal for achieving the highest marks in her graduating class. Jackie enjoyed time in her backyard garden and deck, birdwatching and her mini home in Florida, and most of all, her Friday lunches with the "Lunch Bunch" at Armdale Yacht Club, not to mention relaxing on board "Sloop du Jour" in the club marina. She is survived by her husband, Paul, to whom she would have been married 45 years on December 24; brother, Hugh Fraser, Fredericton; son, Andrew, Lakeside, and his partner, Shelly Casey; daughter, Kirsten MacGillivray, Timberlea; son-in-law, Urban MacGillivray, California; daughter-in-law, Glynis; grandchildren, Erin, Alex, Nadia, Jordan, Jared, and Dalton. She was predeceased by brother, Angus. Cremation has taken place. Service will be delayed until spring. On-line condolences may be sent to: barr@ns.sympatico.ca
