SHIRLEY MARIE TOWNSEND

TOWNSEND, SHIRLEY MARIE March 19, 1929 Shirley Townsend died peacefully at the Chalmers Regional Hospital on October 27, 2008. Shirley was the daughter of Kenneth H. Staples and Florence Staples. She graduated from the University of New Brunswick in 1950 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree. Shirley loved children and for a number of years operated a kindergarten ("Tiny Tots Workshop") with her dear friends Alice Lou Rouse and then Faith Belyea. Later, her second love, books, led her to various positions at the University of New Brunswick libraries, including a number of years at the Harriet Irving Library. Her greatest love, however, was her family. She is predeceased by her husband, Bill. Surviving Shirley is her brother, Reginald (Reg) Staples (Pat); her children, David (Marlyn), John (Jo Anne) and Alyson (Steve) as well as beloved grandchildren Jack, Alanna and Sam; nephew, Dr. Robert (Bob) Staples and niece, Jan Staples. Through her dedication to her community (I.O.D.E, U.C.W, and a number of other volunteer organizations) and her church, St. Paul's United, she made life long friends whom she loved dearly. Her home at 55 Woodfield Cresent in Sunshine Gardens was open to all, young and old, for fifty years. Shirley, sister, mother, grandmother, aunt and friend, we will all miss you. The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to Shirley's dear friend, Jenn Oakes, for her unfailing love and support. By request there will be no visitation. A memorial service will take place on Thursday, October 30, 2008 at St. Paul's United Church at 2 pm with Rev. H. G. MacKenzie officiating. A reception will follow at the Delta Hotel. Donations may be made to the UNB - Harriet Irving Library Acquisitions Fund. McAdams Select Community Funeral Home has been entrusted with the arrangements. www.mcadamsfh.com (458-9170)
