MARY LOU SYPHER

SYPHER, MARY LOU The death of Mary Lou Sypher of Fredericton (and formerly of Jemseg), occurred on Saturday November 15th at the Dr. Everett Chalmer's Hospital. She was born in Main River, Kent County in 1936 and was the oldest daughter of the late Robert and Helen (Olsen) Lawson. Mary Lou is survived by her husband Basil Kirk; three daughters; Shelley McElman Parks (Richard), Suzanne Sypher (MJ Hoyt), and Catherine Sypher McTimoney (David). Mary Lou was very involved and influential in the lives of her five grandchildren; Anne and Jayne Holyoke, Matthew McElman, Benjamin and Elizabeth McTimoney. She is also survived by siblings Jean Betts (the late Donald), Ken Lawson (Barb), Greta Cooper (Paul); brother-in-law Allan Cromwell; aunt Edith Huggard; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Mary Lou was predeceased by her first husband, Gerald Sypher in 1987; her parents; her parents-in-law, Oland and Hazel Sypher; and her sister, Ruth Cromwell. Mary Lou was a graduate of the New Brunswick Teacher's College and her career in education saw her teach in Minto, Fredericton, Jemseg and Cambridge Narrows. Mary Lou and her late husband Gerald also operated Sypher's General Store in Jemseg for 25 years. Over her life, Mary Lou was active in many groups and organizations and held various roles within each. While she enjoyed her career and community participation tremendously, Mary Lou's true passion and interest was for family. She gladly left teaching for many years to be home with her daughters. She was a hands on grandmother and spent many enjoyable hours rocking and reading to all her "grandbabies". Her house was a warm, inviting place where all her children and grandchildren found comfort and loved to be. Home was where Mary Lou's heart was and we, her family, feel fortunate to have reaped the benefits. We made sure she left this world with the knowledge that her impact on all of us was meaningful and enduring. Visitation will be at McAdam's Select Community Funeral Home on Monday November 17th from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9. The funeral service will be held at Grace Memorial United Baptist Church, where Mary Lou was a member, on Tuesday November 18th at 11am; Reverend Doug Hapeman officiating. Interment will take place at the Jemseg Cemetery. For those who wish, monetary donations may be made to the Jemseg Memorial Garden or the Jemseg Cemetery. Over the course of her 2½ year journey with cancer, Mary Lou was the grateful recipient of numerous blood transfusions. Therefore, donations of blood can be made in her memory by contacting Canadian Blood Services at 1-888-236-6283. www.mcadamsfh.com
