KIY, DIRK UWE Family and friends wish to announce the death of Dirk Uwe Kiy in Salmon Arm, B.C. on Monday December 15, 2008 after a three year courageous battle with ALS. Born in 1954, a native of Bathurst, Dirk graduated from the University of New Brunswick where he was a star volleyball player with the Red Rebels. He lead them to the AUS Championship in 1978 while garnering a CIAU all-star award. Dirk loved to travel and had wonderful trips to Australia, Malta and Mexico with family and many friends. After meeting and marrying his wife Geri and residing in Calgary for ten years, the Kiys moved to the beautiful area in Salmon Arm, B.C. Dirk loved and was loved by the community of Salmon Arm. He worked with troubled young people, ran an outdoor adventure center, coached high school volleyball and wrote and published many stories. He had a passion for all music and nature. Dirk will be remembered for his contagious smile and a unique personality that touched so many people. Dirk met ALS with great respect and courage. He lived with a positive attitude and zest for life while following his own motto "Every moment is a chance to learn and teach". Dirk is survived by his wife Geri, their beautiful children Spencer and Maiya of Salmon Arm, his parents Vera and Werner Kiy of Kelowna and a brother Thomas of Calgary. There will be an Inukshuk (a safe passage) for Dirk at the Downtown Activity Centre in Salmon Arm on Friday, December 19 at 2:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the University of New Brunswick Dirk Kiy Leadership Award, ALS Society of British Columbia or the Dirk Kiy Challenge Foundation for Youth c/o Salmon Arm Partners in Community Leadership in Salmon Arm. There will be a Celebration of Life in the spring - Dirk didn't like the winter!
