EDNA JEAN JOHNSTON

JOHNSTON, EDNA JEAN It is with great sadness the family announces the passing of Edna Jean (Weeks) Johnston, at the home of Randy and Melinda Johnston in Moores Mills, NB, on January 13, 2009. Mommy joins her childhood sweetheart and husband of 57 years, Kenneth Milton Johnston who died December 8, 2007. Born February 22, 1931, her loving memory will live on in her seven children; daughters Brenda Sansom (David) in Fredericton, Terry Dickerson (Bobby) St.Stephen and Marlene Moore (Dean) in Penniac, son Marshall (Syreena) in New Germany, N.S., and triplet sons who all reside in Moore's Mills, Robert (Pam), Randal (Melinda) and Rodney (Tanya). Mommy is also survived by grandchildren Teena, Tricia, Jami, Samantha, Timmy, Trevor, Kristan, Wesley and twins, Brandan and Brandi and great grandchildren, Hannah, Emma, Ethan, Madison, Logan, Jenna, Reese and Rylan. Mommy lived her entire life in Charlotte County, having been raised in Old Ridge where she met Daddy while tobogganing. The oldest girl in a family of seven children, she was predeceased by her adoring father, Burton, her mother Myrtle and her special older brother Douglas. She is survived by sisters, Louise Cleghorn (Kenny), Donna Libby (Stephen), Grace Cook (Kenny), Doris Stewart (Roger) and brother Kenny (Fran). Mommy was the epitome of the saying, " big surprises come in small packages." She graduated from St. Stephen High School where she enjoyed such nick names as "Spark Plug,"" Squirt" and "Pint Size". In the last chapter of her life Mommy delighted in the new name of Rocket given to her by her son, Randal. Jeannie never let her size discourage her from attempting any challenge or engaging any challenger. Her family often lovingly called her the "Little Banty Rooster". Mommy was born a natural mother, homemaker, seamstress, nurse, gardener and handy woman. A newly wed at nineteen, she moved to Moore's Mills with Daddy's grandparents, Willard and Mildred (Moore) Johnston, where she became chief cook and bottle washer. Within three years she had her first three children. During those early years she quickly mobilized her many talents as she pumped water, chopped wood, stoked fires, gardened, canned vegetables, preserved fruits and pickles and mastered a large and uncooperative wringer washer. Our home was most often graced by a long, carefully hung wash where the largest sheets were first and the smallest socks last. After the birth of the triplets her excitement peaked when Buchanan Brothers truck arrived with three new high chairs and an automatic washer and dryer. Christmas church pageants and school concerts would find her girls in carefully sewn matching dresses. Mommy could lug pails of berries and stack heavy boxes matching any man and outdoing many at the family owned blueberry fields in Tower Hill. At the family business, Causeway Motors in Oak Bay, Mommy operated the canteen making world famous fried clams and lobster rolls as well as acting as part time service manager, accountant and gas pump attendant. As a young woman she most likely honed her waitress and cooking skills when she worked for Phil McCarroll at Phil's Restaurant. When the family purchased the Milltown Garage from long time friend, Norman Holmes, Mommy continued her business duties as well as managing an apartment building. She modeled a work ethic and illustrated that it is not the size or gender that determines your ability but your personal determination and will to succeed. Even though osteoporosis and emphysema left this most capable woman bedridden, she would delight us with her wit, humour and dear sweet smile. She had a determined desire to spend her final days in Moore's Mills and that she did. Our family is forever indebted to, and blessed to have a dedicated and loving son, Randy and his wonderful wife Melinda who, together with Mommy's self proclaimed guard dog, Champ, provided a most caring and loving home in Moore's Mills. We express our gratitude to Kindred Home Care and, Pam Thibeault, Carolyn Fagan, Lori Greenier and Nancy Richard for their loving care. Dr. Kay, the staff at Extra-Mural, Charlotte County Hospital and Hospice of Charlotte have provided immeasurable care and compassion. The support from family and friends will be remembered forever. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts. The family will receive friends at The S.O. Mehan and Son Funeral Home Ltd. 23 Main Street, St.Stephen, NB on Saturday, January 17, 2009 from 12 to 2 PM followed by a Funeral Service at 2 PM. Interment at Moores Mills Rural Cemetery. Remembrances may be made to Hospice of Charlotte, Moores Mills Community Club at 8427 Route 3, Moores Mills, NB E5A 1Y1 or a charity of the donor's choice.
