DORIS WENDA (SHERWOOD) PALMER

PALMER, DORIS WENDA (SHERWOOD) Fredericton - Surrounded by the love and presence of her family, Doris died peacefully with dignity and courage at the Chalmers Regional Hospital in Fredericton on January 25, 2009. Born in Moncton on April 3, 1922, she grew up in Campbellton, NB, the daughter of Fred and Zella (Hassan) Sherwood. She also lived in Saint John, NB, Ottawa and Toronto, ON and spent the last 45 years in Fredericton. A woman of deep faith and inner strength, she was loyal, generous and compassionate. She was devoted to her family, her friends and her church, enjoyed her home and many feline companions over the years. Doris had a wonderful sense of humour, loved flowers, appreciated beauty and had an enduring interest in the people and happenings of her community. Willing to accept new challenges, she always gave her best. During WWII she served with the WRENS and later worked for CFNB. A long time civil servant, she worked for the Centennial Commission, NB Health, and finally served as secretary to the New Brunswick Ombudsman. Active in all areas of church life she also volunteered with Cansurmount, the Literacy Program and the Community Kitchen. She is survived by her daughters, Jennifer Longley, Kentville, NS and Sarah (Neil) Stocker, Sault Ste. Marie, ON. She dearly loved and was so proud of her six grandchildren, Peter Longley (Sandra Mason), Darrell Longley (Kim Wolstenholme) and John Longley (Jes LeBoubon), Kellie Stocker (Adam Hilchie), Andrew Stocker and Christopher Stocker. Six great-grandchildren brought her additional joy, Hannah Albert, Kyle, Zach, Grace, Izak and Evan Longley. Also survived by her cousins, Ray Walker and Edith Mills, sister-in-law Rhoda (late John) Palmer and their children, as well as her cousins' children and countless special friends. In addition to her parents she was predeceased by her brother Clyde Sherwood, her former husband Ev Palmer and her son-in-law Mac Longley. Honouring her wishes, Doris' body has been donated to Dalhousie's Faculty of Medicine for research. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 28 from 12:15 to 1:45 p.m. at Saint Andrew's Presbyterian Church, Charlotte Street, Fredericton with a memorial service following at 2 p.m. Burial will take place in the Fredericton Rural Cemetery Extension at a later date. Donations to Saint Andrews Presbyterian Church, the Fredericton SPCA, the Extra Mural Hospital Program or the Palliative Care Unit at the Chalmers Hospital would be appreciated by the family.
