MICHAEL GEORGE POWER
POWER, MICHAEL GEORGE Michael (Mike) George Power passed away on May 10, 2009 at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Regional Hospital following a courageous battle with cancer. Mike had an extensive background in the local media, in both radio and print. He served as Sports Director for UNB's radio station. CHSR-FM and the Brunswickan during his university career. He worked in local radio and then with the Daily Gleaner as a valued member of the Gleaner sports team for some 20 years. He was a fixture at Speedway 660, where he covered the local stock car scene; in local arenas, gyms and playing fields, where he chronicled high school and university sports; and on Baseball Hill, where he spent many summer nights covering the midget, junior, and senior Royals. His Tuesday column- racing in the summer, school sports the rest of the year- was a must read, sprinkled with either wit or wisdom as the subject warranted. Mike was born in Halifax to a military family and while growing up lived in many locations in Canada as well as in England and Germany. After his father's retirement at CFB Gagetown, the family moved to PEI and then to British Columbia while Mike remained in Oromocto. He graduated from Oromocto High School and attended the University of New Brunswick. For ten years he coached the UNB Red Blazers Women's hockey team, winning Provincial championships, taking them to the Canadian National Championships several times, and placing fourth in 1985. In 1993, Mike's tenth season of coaching at UNB, they won their division of the Dominion Women's Hockey Tournament in Brampton, ON. He developed a life long attachment to Women's sports and through hockey he met his future wife to whom he was married in 1991. Mike was a dedicated and loving husband and father. He shared his love with his cats, Patches and Domino and Shetland Sheepdog, J.J. Always a compassionate and caring person, Mike became very attached to those he wrote about sharing their successes and failures in his writing and the personal losses of the families he became so close to. Mike is survived by his wife, Chris MacLoon and his son, Ben at home; his mother, Nell (Sunny) and sister, Lynn of Delta, BC; brother, Robert Power of Vancouver, BC, nieces Carly and Meaghan. Also survived by in-laws, Frank and Joyce MacLoon, Debbie MacLoon-Agnew (Allan), nephews, Scott and Sean; Peter MacLoon (Brenda), niece, Sarah; and Alan MacLoon (Stacie), nephew, Cody all of Fredericton. He was predeceased by his father, Robert Power and sister-in-law, Jenni Power. Visitation will take place at York Funeral Home, 302 Brookside Drive on Wednesday, May 13, 2009 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm. A Memorial Service will take place at York Funeral Home's T. Gordon MacLeod Memorial Chapel on Thursday, May 14, 2009 at 2 pm with Rev. Wilfred Langmaid officiating.
