DONALD ARTHUR MACKINNON

MACKINNON, DONALD ARTHUR, C.D. Donald Arthur MacKinnon, C.D. died on Saturday, June 13, 2009 at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital. Don was born on September 14, 1926 in Stanley, York County, NB. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Ardean (Morris) MacKinnon; his children, Diana MacKinnon (Bill Anderson), Bedford, NS, Donna (Arleigh) Jones, Fredericton, and Vernon (Jane) MacKinnon, Fredericton; his grandsons, Jason Jones and Michael Jones, Fredericton and Blair Anderson, Bedford, NS; his chosen sister and cousin, Annie MacKinnon, Yarmouth, NS; and his special kitty, Snoopy. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Joyce (Morris) Webster (Lester Fraser) Fredericton, his brothers-in-law, Murray Thomas, Stanley, NB and Reginald Brewer, Lindsay, ON; and several nieces, nephews, great-, and great-great nieces and nephews. As Don came from a large and close extended family, he is also survived by many cousins. He was predeceased by his parents Howard and Edith (Pringle) MacKinnon; his sister Margaret (MacKinnon) Thomas; brothers-in-law, Roye Morris and Monty Webster; and sisters-in-law, Sally (Hunter) Morris and Mavis (Morris) Brewer. Don was a member of the regular Canadian Armed Forces, Signal Corps, and later, as part of his commitment to volunteer service, rose to the rank of Major in the Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps. Don attended Moncton Technical School to obtain his credentials in carpentry and later as an industrial arts teacher. He taught at the Moncton Technical School, the Stanley Regional High School, the Fredericton High School and the Devon Junior High School. His service to his community included the RCMP Auxiliary, the York-Sunbury and the New Brunswick Ground Search and Rescue organizations, the Northside Direct Charge Co-op, the Northside Senior Citizens Carpentry Association, Meals on Wheels, Clan MacKinnon of New Brunswick and the New Brunswick Scottish Cultural Association. He was a past Novel Grand of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows and a member of the congregation of St. Andrews Presbyterian Church in Fredericton. Don was the Queen's Jubilee Recipient in recognition of his volunteer service. Visitation will take place at York Funeral Home, 302 Brookside Drive, Fredericton on Monday, June 15, 2009 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm. The funeral service will be held from St. Andrews Presbyterian Church, Fredericton on Tuesday, June 16, 2009 at 11:00 am with Rev. Doug Blaikie officiating and Rev. David Dewar assisting. Pallbearers will be Ernie MacKinnon, Bill MacKinnon, Hazen Thomas, Donnie McCrae, Darrell Hood and Will Johnson. Interment will take place in St. Peter's Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Stanley, NB. For those who wish, memorial donations can be made to the Canadian Kidney Foundation, Canadian Diabetes Association, Canadian Cancer Association, St. Andrews Presbyterian Church or St. Peter's Presbyterian Church, Palliative Care Unit at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Regional Hospital or to any of the organizations to which Don volunteered his time.
