MARJORIE IRENE BATES
BATES, MARJORIE IRENE Marjorie Irene Bates of Windsor Court, Fredericton, NB, formerly of Douglas Avenue, wife of the late Eugene Bates, died on Wednesday, June 17, 2009 at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Regional Hospital, Fredericton, NB. Born on April 14, 1918 in Upper Maugerville, NB, Marjorie was the only child of the late Harry and Violet Smith. She was raised on her parents' farm in Upper Maugerville. Upon graduation from New Brunswick Normal School, Marjorie taught at schools in the Fredericton area, including Charlotte Street School and the Devon Superior School. She possessed an alert, rigorous mind, and she was a gifted artist, translating her love of beauty into fine oil paintings. Marjorie's life was characterized by service to others, in her church, in her teaching, and in prayer. Two areas of ministry which gave her special joy were leading home Bible studies, and befriending international students through a Host Family program, in cooperation with the UNB and STU campuses. Her words and actions always bore testimony to her love of our Lord Jesus Christ, and her desire to serve Him. Marjorie is survived by brother-in-law, Clyde Bates and his wife, Patsy of Victoria, BC. Although there will be no visitation by request, a Funeral Service will take place at Grace Memorial Baptist Church on Tuesday, June 23, 2009 at 2 pm with Rev. Doug Hapeman officiating. Interment will take place in Maugerville Baptist Cemetery. For those who wish, remembrances may be made to Grace Memorial Church. Funeral Arrangements are entrusted to York Funeral Home, 302 Brookside Drive, Fredericton, NB.
