KATE (KATHRYN JANE) MOSSMAN

MOSSMAN, KATE (KATHRYN JANE) Kate (Kathryn Jane) Mossman, 65, of Garden Lots, Lunenburg Co., died suddenly from heart failure on July 5 at home. Born May 26, 1944 in Louth Township, Niagara Peninsula, Ont., she was a daughter of the late Jack and Geraldine Brodrick. Kate grew up on a fruit farm and her best friend as a young teenager was her horse "Chiefy." She was a keen swimmer as a youngster, serving as a lifeguard in Niagara and continued to swim in her later years. After an education at Ryerson Institute in Toronto, she began her career as a social worker in Toronto, and then moved on to start a new family in Lunenburg, N.S. While raising her two children, Kate served on the Lunenburg Heritage Society and helped start the Lunenburg Craft Festival in the seventies. Kate later moved to Ontario and for 11 years worked as Assistant Curator of the Port Colborne Maritime Museum in Niagara, Ont. Later she moved back to the Maritimes and served as Executive Director of the York Sunbury Museum for eight years in Fredericton, N.B. Retiring from the museum world, Kate inspired by her lifelong creative edge, enrolled in the Clay Program at the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design, completing two years there. Moving on, the draw of the ocean and old friends prompted her return to the sea and the Lunenburg area. She loved "mucking about" in clay and throwing and firing pots and did so up until a few months before her passing. Along the way she maintained an avid interest in her incredibly expressive gardens and well loved birds. She shared these passions, and lively discussions about local and world community issues with old and new friends she made throughout her life. Kate is survived by her husband, Bob of 37 years; daughter, Jessica and her partner Marc McCarthy, Black Point, N.S.; son, Jonathan, Garden Lots, and his partner, Sara Man; beloved dog, Zoe; brother-in-law, David (Glenna), Stittsville, Ont.; sister-in-law, Susan, Five Islands, N.S., and her partner, Tom Spence; nieces, Lisa and Heidi; nephews, Steve and Antonio; an uncle and aunt, Gordon and Shirley Cooper, St. Catharines, Ont.; and cousin, Jim Cooper (Louise), and their two children, also of St. Catharines. Thanks are extended to all lovingly remembered friends in Canada, the U.S., Australia, the UK and India for their most appreciated prayers and good wishes. Throughout her life, Kate shared her love with many-well beyond her immediate family. Further thanks to para-medics, South Shore and Halifax doctors, hospital nurses and the VON for their care and compassion during Kate's short two-month battle with cancer. Cremation has taken place. Funeral Arrangements are under the direction of the Dana L. Sweeny Funeral Home, 11213, Hwy. # 3, Lunenburg. A Celebration of life service for Kate will be held on Saturday, August 1, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. at St. John's Anglican Church, Lunenburg, Rev. Michael Mitchell officiating. Memorial donations may be made to the charity of your choice. www.sweenyfuneralhome.ca
