SMITH, CELIA MARGARET Celia Margaret Smith of Orchard View, Gagetown and formerly of Fredericton, died peacefully on Wednesday , October 21, 2009. She was in her 98th year. Born in Fredericton, she was the daughter of the late Howard Hitchings and Lyneah Maud (Staples) Blair. Celia is survived by her daughter, Barbara McQueen (Ralph) of Kelly Creek; grandchildren, Mary Ann Clarke (David) and Heather Watson-Passmore (Kirk) and great-grandchildren, Nigel, Adrian and Jessie Clarke and Russell Watson-Passmore all of Ontario; a brother, Roland Blair, a sister-in-law, Doreen Blair both of Fredericton; nephews Stuart Blair (Janet), Fred Blair (Marilyn) and niece, Diane Richard (Aurele), all of Lake George, N.B. Predeceased by her parents; her husband, Robert Allan Smith; daughter, Margaret Ann Watson; brother, Fred Blair and two infant siblings, Henry and Mary Blair. Celia was a longtime member of Christ Church Cathedral and active in the Altar Guild, ACW, Friendship Guild, Friendly Visitors and other Church programs. She belonged to the S.P.C.A., the Fredericton Art Club, and the Beaverbrook Art Gallery where she became one of the first gallery docents. In the past, she was a member of the Bliss Carmen I.O.D.E. Celia played the piano with ease and great passion. She played by ear, never having taken lessons, but could reproduce complex melodies that she heard on radio and was described by choir directors in her early days at Wilmot Church as having "perfect pitch". She retained that faculty all her life and played into her 90's for residents of Pine Grove where she volunteered for many years. There will be no visitation by request. A memorial service will be held at Christ Church Cathedral, Fredericton on Saturday, October 24th, 2009 at 2:00 pm, The Very Reverend Keith Joyce will officiate. Interment will be in the Fredericton Rural Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial tributes may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.
