Howard Alexander Oliver

Stellarton Howard Alexander Oliver, 92, of Acadia Avenue, Stellarton, formerly of New Glasgow passed away April 30, 2008, in the Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow. Born in New Waterford, he was a son of the late James Edwin Oliver and Anne (MacLennan) Oliver. Howard was a resident of Stellarton for the past five years prior to which he lived in New Glasgow for 20 years. He was a retired coal miner having worked in the mines for over 40 years, starting with the Acadia Coal Co. and in 1952 he transferred to the Dominion Coal Co., Glace Bay, where he became manager in his later years. Howard was a veteran of the Second World War having served as a captain with the Royal Hamilton Light Infantry. He was wounded in battle while overseas. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Stellarton, and a life member of Keith Masonic Lodge No 23 AF & AM. He is survived by his wife, Phyllis (Lorimer) Gray; sons, Harvey (Andree), Lac Sebastian, Que., Bruce (Judy), New Glasgow, Sandy (Mimi), French Village, N.S.; eight grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and his sister, Ethel Allanson, Pictou. He was predeceased by his first wife, May (MacDonald), son, James; brother, Bill, sister, Margaret Horne. Visitation will be from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., Saturday in the H.C. MacQuarrie Funeral Home, Stellarton. Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m., Sunday in First Presbyterian Church, Stellarton. Rev. Charles McPherson officiating. Burial will be in Heatherdale Memorial Gardens. Donations in his memory may be made to First Presbyterian Church, Stellarton or a charity of your choice.
