Gertrude Foley

Antigonish Gertrude Foley died peacefully at home on the 3rd of May, 2008. Born in New Aberdeen, she was a daughter of John and Hannah (Matthews) Cullen. She pursued a nursing career in New York City and worked there for 13 years. She married William Foley and settled in Antigonish where they raised eight children. She was an active member of the Catholic Women's League and St. Martha's Hospital Auxiliary; but most of all, Gert was a loyal wife, a mother summa cum laude, and a grandmother beyond belief. She will leave a large void in the lives of her children, Anita, Guysborough, Geraldine, Vancouver, Sheila McMullin, Oakville, Shirley Foley, Ottawa, Eileen Biggs, Ottawa, Maureen Ryan, Bedford and her son, Terrence Foley, Montreal. Most of all Gert Foley will be cherished for enriching and forming the lives of her 18 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Prof. William T. Foley; daughter, Mary; sisters, Elizabeth, Mary, Ellen, Anne, Kathleen and Eileen; brothers, William, John, Michael and Andrew. She is also survived by her sister, Rita Gauthier, Vancouver; sisters-in-law, Shirley Sears (best friend), Antigonish and Patricia Foley, St. Peters. She was a generous, kind, and caring person. Her family would like to honour the care and love bestowed on her over the last few years by Beatrice DeCoste, Linda Richardson, Shirley McFarlane, Annabelle Kennedy, and Betty Grace. Special thanks to Karen Smith for her wonderful devotion to our mother. Visitation in C.L. Curry Funeral Home, 135 College St., Antigonish today from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral mass will be held in St. Ninian’s Cathedral on Tuesday at 10 a.m. with Rev. Andrew Gillies presiding. Burial in the parish cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society. Online condolences www.clcurry.com.
