Pearl MacCharles

1922-2008 Pearl MacCharles, a resident of MacGillivary Guest Home, formerly of Howie Centre, passed away peacefully on May 7, 2008, after a lengthy illness. Originally from Landis, Sask., Pearly was the daughter of the late Rudy and Etta Wilfong Van Haitsma Straub. Pearl came to Cape Breton in 1940 with her sister, Gladys and brother-in-law, Tom Tobin. Pearl is the last surviving member or her immediate family. Pearl is survived by her son, Delroy and someone who was like a son to her, Gary Annesty. Four granddaughters, Cindy MacCharles, Sydney, Tanya (John Petruskavich), Oakville, Ont., Brenda (Mark Brown), Campbellcroft, Ont., Susan (Sid Chapman), Bowmanville, Ont.; seven great-grandchildren, John Douglas and Jasmine MacCharles, Kurt, Robert and Heather Brown, Scott and Sabrina Chapman. Daughter-in-law, Janice MacCharles, Sydney; son-in-law, John Proctor, Bowmanville, Ont.; sisters-in-law, Delores Van Haitsma and Lillian MacCharles, Howie Centre. As well as cousins, nieces and nephews in Nova Scotia, Ontario, Saskatchewan, Alberta and the U.S. Besides her parents, Pearl was predeceased by her husband, John N. MacCharles, daughter, Shirley MacCharles Proctor, son, John D. MacCharles, sister, Gladys Van Haitsma Tobin, brothers, Delroy and Bill Van Haitsma. A memorial service will be held at the MacGillivary Guest Home Chapel, Friday, May 9, 2008, at 10:30 a.m., Fr. Michael Rankin officiating. My mother donated her remains to Dalhousie School of Medical Research. Until we meet again, Mom, you’ll always be in my heart with Dad, Shirley and John D. May you together enjoy the glory of God’s Heavenly Garden.
