77, New Waterford It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Stelvio Piovesan on May 6, 2008, in the New Waterford Hospital. Born in New Waterford, he was a son of the late Joseph and Rosina (Tonnilatto) Piovesan. Stelvio served in the Canadian Army from 1953-1956 (Korea). He was a life member of the Army, Navy, Airforce and a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 15, New Waterford. He was a coal miner for over 40 years, employed in both Lingan and 12 Colliery until his retirement due to an injury. Stelvio was a strong member of the UMWA. His favourite pastime was going for long drives. Surviving are his wife of 54 years, Rita (Currie); eight children, Joey (Renee), Ontario, Paul, Red Deer, Alta., Lee (Robert) Fraser, New Waterford, Margie, Ontario, Marina (Donnie), Lower Sackville, Rosina (Troy) Tobin, Manitoba, Roxanne (Kendall) Jessome, Mill Creek, Mary (Michael) Fraser, New Victoria. He was ‘Poppy’ to his 15 grandchildren, Aaron, Amy, Patrick, Gregory, Priscilla, Stephen, Lindsay, Danny, Nicholas, Joshua, Jeffrey, Matthew, Tony, Jordan and Michele. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews and his beloved cat, Cocoa. Stelvio was the last surviving member of his immediate family. He was predeceased by brothers, Louis, Ferrucio and Mario, sisters, Lee and Jeanette. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held Sunday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. A funeral mass to celebrate Stelvio’s life will take place Monday, May 12 at 11 a.m. in the Parish of St. Leonard, St. Agnes Church with burial in the parish cemetery. A luncheon will follow in the Army, Navy, Airforce, New Waterford. Donations in Stelvio’s memory may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society or the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia.
