Sgt. A.A. (Andy) MacDonald CD2 (Ret'd)

With broken hearts we sadly announce the passing of Andy MacDonald, at home, on Thursday, May 15, 2008. Born in Washabuck, he was the son of Mary C. MacDonald, by whom he is survived. Andy leaves to mourn the love of his life, his wife, Dena Campbell MacNeil MacDonald and her son, Alan Arthur (Ivy) and their sons, Jarret and James Alan. Andy also leaves to mourn a wonderful host of cousins and friends; especially his extended family — that of his sister-in-law, Eulalia Campbell and her wonderful family. Also, his brother-in-law, John Hugh (Sylvia) Campbell and their wonderful family. Also mourning Andy are three daughters and their families in Quebec, Alberta and Wichita. His outstanding career spanned 34 years in the Canadian Armed Forces, Air element. The first six years he served as a safety systems tech and in 1960 he was accepted to train with the SAR tech division. As a SAR tech, he excelled in each and every endeavour, receiving numerous awards, certificates and recommendations for bravery and dedication to his service to his country, Canada. Andy served from sea to sea and proudly, but never boastfully, dedicated himself to serving the lives of others, true to the SAR tech motto “SO THAT OTHERS MAY LIVE.” Upon retiring in 1998, Andy was a member in the Para Rescue Association of Canada, The Royal Canadian Air Force Association and was extremely active in the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch No. 124, where he served as past president and in all other offices. Andy was actively involved in his church. Thanks to Fr. Fred Morley and to Fr. Charles Donovan for giving Andy the opportunity to be an alter server at Saturday evening mass and funerals. He was most humbled and proud of this privilege. Memorial service for Andy will be Monday, May 19 at 11 a.m. at St. Columba Parish Church with burial of ashes in the parish cemetery, Rev. Charles Donovan P.P. officiating. Reception to follow where all friends and relatives will gather in Andy’s memory at the Grandona Legion Branch No. 124. If you wish to remember Andy by donation, give to St. Columba Cemetery Fund or the Cape Breton Cancer Centre — or better still, just be good to one another.
