Joseph Raymond MacPhee

Sydney Rive r Joseph R. MacPhee, Sydney River, passed away suddenly at home on Friday, May 16, 2008. Born in Soldier’s Cove, he was the son of the late William and Beatrice (Martell) MacPhee, formerly of Davenport Road, Sydney. He was a member of Our Lady of Fatima parish. Joe was retired from Sydney Steel and actively coached hockey for many years. In the late 1970s and early 1980s, he operated the Cape Breton Summer Hockey School. Always proud of his Scottish heritage, Joe loved nothing better than listening to the music of his favourite fiddlers. He is survived by his wife, the former Jean Marie O’Brien; son, Christopher Joseph (Laurie), Sylvan Lake, Alta.; and his sister, Rita Rines, Lower Sackville, N.S. He is also survived by nieces and nephews, Donna (Peter) Weed, Martha (Mike) Douglas, Karen Dunn, Kevin O’Brien, Lorne Penny, Michael Penny, James O’Brien, Jeannie Shepherd, Tracey Bungay, Janice and Lesley Dairou, Crystal and Theresa O’Brien. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by a brother, John Dan and a sister, Ada Dunn, Ojai, California. Visitation for the late Mr. MacPhee will take place at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, Sunday, May 18 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A funeral mass will be celebrated at 3 p.m., Monday, at Our Lady of Fatima Church with Rev. Norman MacPhee officiating. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks. Family flowers only. Memorial donations to the Cape Breton Cancer Centre would be appreciated.
