Baxter Clarke

81, Glace Bay The family of Baxter Clarke, aged 81, deeply regret to announce his passing on May 20, 2008. Born and raised in Glace Bay to George and Caroline (Thomas) Clarke, he married Alexis Wilton in 1950 and together they raised their family. Baxter worked tirelessly for his family, church and community. He spent his early working years with Devco railway. He later worked at the freight shed, round house and he finished his career at the rail centre, Sydney. Baxter worked with the Citizen’s Service League as a supervisor with the house repair program. He was a dedicated lay reader in his church for 30 years. In 2003, he was honoured to receive the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medal in recognition of his many years of community service. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Alexis and their four children, Donna Routledge (Clarence), Glace Bay, Dave Clarke (Margi MacIsaac), Glace Bay, Nancy Clarke (Bruce Ring), Halifax, Ruth Clarke (David McNabb), Albert Bridge. He is also survived by a sister, Caroline Roberts, Glace Bay. He will be sadly missed by his grandchildren, Dr. Tanya Routledge, P.E.I., Christopher Routledge, Truro, Scott Routledge, Glace Bay, Colin Clarke, Glace Bay, Jillian and Tara White, Halifax, Cai and Luke McNabb, Albert Bridge; and great-grandchildren, Emilie, Jeffory and Parker Routledge, Alexis Mundle and Chloe Routledge. Baxter was predeceased by his parents, George and Caroline Clarke, a sister, Georgina and a brother, Russell, in infancy. In respect of his wishes, cremation has taken place and there will be no visitation. A funeral celebration of Baxter’s life will be held at St. Mary’s Anglican Church, Glace Bay, Saturday, May 24 at 2 p.m. Burial will follow in the parish cemetery. A reception will be held at the church following the service. Donations in Baxter’s memory may be made to the church which held such a prominent place in his life, St. Mary’s Anglican Church.
