74, Port Morien It is with great sadness that the family of Rod Hardy announces his passing on May 22, 2008, surrounded by his family at the Aberdeen Hospital in New Glasgow. Rod was born in Rose Blanche, Nfld., he was a resident of Port Morien for over 50 years. Rod started fishing at a very early age with his lifelong friend, Tom MacDonald. On a fishing trip to Cape Breton he met Elaine Robinson and in January 2008 they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. In addition to his wife, he is also survived by his son, Roland (Shirley Lecreux), Westville; daughters, Dorothy Jane (Michael McLean), Lower Sackville, and Rhodena (Robert Dearn), Timberlea. He adored his six grandchildren, Kyle and Michael Dearn, Jessica and Steven Hardy, Jordan and Noah McLean. Rod is also survived by his sisters, Sarah Pender, Dorothy Piercy, Merina Mauger, Sylvia Wagg and Alice Keizer. Rod was a retired member of the Boilermakers Union, Lodge 73, having been a member for 37 years. He was actively involved with the Port Morien Volunteer Fire Department for many years. Rod was predeceased by his parents, Esther and Jack Hardy and also an infant daughter. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. Visitation will be from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., Sunday. A funeral service will be held Monday, May 26, 2008, at 2 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Ralph Johnston officiating. Burial will follow in Black Brook Cemetery. Family flowers only by request. Memorial donations in Rod’s memory may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society of Canada. The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at the Shiretown Nursing Home in Pictou County for the exceptional care and compassion that they showed Rod during his short stay there and also to the Palliative Care doctors and nurses at the Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow.
