REV. GEORGE E. RILEY

RILEY, REV. GEORGE E. - The death of Rev. George Edward Riley, Pastor of St. Rose of Lima Parish, Saint John, occurred at the Saint John Regional Hospital on Monday, July 1, 2002. Father Riley was born in Saint John on May 14, 1930, a son of the late John T. and Mary Ellen (Keohan) Riley. After studying in Holy Trinity School and St. Vincent's Boys School, he graduated from St. Vincent's High School in 1948. He then attended St. Thomas University in Chatham, graduating in 1952. He studied for the priesthood at Holy Heart Seminary in Halifax, and was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Saint John in St. Peter's Church on June 15, 1957 by Most Rev. A. B. Leverman. After ordination he served as Assistant Pastor at Holy Rosary Parish, Minto until 1964. He was then appointed Assistant Pastor at St. Francis Xavier in Sussex. In 1969 he was appointed Pastor of St. Ann's Parish, Kingsclear, where he served until 1979 when he was appointed Pastor of St. Anthony's Parish, Fredericton. In 1989 he left Fredericton to return to Saint John succeeding his brother, Rev. Raymond Riley as Pastor of St. Rose of Lima Parish. He was still serving as Pastor at the time of his death. Throughout the years he has also served the Diocese of Saint John in a number of different capacities, including member of the Council of Priests, member of the College of Consultors, member of the Diocesan Vocation Committee, member of the Priests Personnel Committee, member of the Priests Pension Fund Committee, and member of the Pastoral Care Advisory Committees of the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital, Fredericton, and the Saint John Regional Hospital. He was pre-deceased by three brothers, Rev. Raymond, Donald, and Francis Riley. He is survived by one brother, Dr. John M. Riley (Mary) of Ottawa; one sister, Miss Mona M. Riley of Saint John; two sisters-in-law, Melissa Riley and Marie Murphy, both of Saint John; and several nieces and nephews. Resting at the Cathedral Rectory, 91 Waterloo St., with visiting on Tuesday and Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9. Translation to the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception will take place on Wednesday evening at seven o'clock, followed by Solemn Vespers. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception of Thursday morning at ten o'clock.
