Flora Gilday

Glace Bay Flora (Flo) Gilday of 75 Park Street, Glace Bay, died Sunday, June 8, 2008, at the Glace Bay Healthcare Complex. Born in Sydney Mines, N.S., on January 20, 1920, Flo was the daughter of the late Neil and Catherine “Cass” (Bates) MacLeod and wife of the late Patrick Gilday. Following graduation from Glace Bay High School, she was employed with the Dominion Coal Company as a secretary in their offices in Glace Bay. She married Pat Gilday in April, 1942. They settled in Whitney Pier, N.S., where Paddy was employed with the Dominion Stores as manager but eventually moved to Glace Bay where Paddy was employed with the Cape Breton Development Corp. as an electrician until his retirement. Mom was a valued member of the CWL of St. Anne’s and also a member of the Outreach Program at St. Anne’s. Mom is survived by “her girls,” Deane (Bill McDonald), Grande Prairie, Patricia (Peter Campbell) with whom she resided, Norma (Donnie MacAdam), Boutilier’s Point, Cathy (Kevin MacLeod), Grande Prairie, Eileen (Darrell Flynn), Glace Bay and Janet (Rick Bussey), Glace Bay. She is also survived by loving grandchildren, Pat, Colleen, Adam, Leanne, Kate, Eileen-Marie, Paddy and Emily-Grace. She has three beautiful great-grandchildren, Joel, Liam and Will. She is also survived by her sister, Norma, Ottawa and a number of wonderful nieces and nephews. She is also survived by step-grandchildren, Mark and Jenna Campbell. Mom was predeceased by her husband, Pat; brother, Joseph; sisters, Grace and Deane; her twin daughter, Judith in infancy, as well as her parents and granddaughter, Deanna. Mom was a loving, giving human being who loved people, especially young people. She gave generously of her time to all knew her and was a gift to her entire family. A very heartfelt thank you to the nurses of G.B. Healthcare Complex whose care was unsurpassed, especially Donalda MacAdam. A loving thank you to Dr. B. O’Brien whose attention to Mom was so very appreciated for many years and who supported our family entirely thoughout Mom’s ordeal while in the hospital. A special thank you to Fr. Doug Murphy who visited Mom several times while in the hospital. Visitation for Mom will take place at Curry’s Funeral Home, 775 Main St., on Tuesday, Jun 10 from 7-9 p.m. and Wednesday, June 11 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Mass of Resurrection will take place Thursday, June 12, at 10 a.m. in St. Anne’s Church, with Father Leo Boone officiating and with the CWL Honour Guard in attendance. CWL will offer lunch afterwards in St. Anne’s.
