Raymond 'Ray' Nelson Powell

93, Aspen, Guysborough County Powell, Raymond ‘Ray’ Nelson, 93, of Aspen, Guysborough County, passed away June 10, 2008, in the Dartmouth General Hospital. Born in Glenwood, N.L., he was a son of the late Nathaniel and Liza (Leit) Powell. He was a retired RCMP officer and a life member of the RCMP Veterans Association. He was also employed at Sydney Steel, Trenton Industries, Halifax Shipyards and Simmons Ltd. Ray was a well-known athlete having played hockey with the Sydney Millionaires, New Glasgow Bombers and Halifax Crescents and baseball with the Halifax Shipyards. He was a member of the Nova Scotia Sports Hall of Fame and a member of the Royal Canadian Legion. Ray was a member of Christ Anglican Church, Sydney, and an adherent of Kirk Memorial United Church, Aspen. Surviving are daughters, Karen Miller, Nanaimo, B.C., Claudia (Randy) Currie, Dartmouth; son, Raymond C., Halifax; grandchildren, Kristan and Tara Miller and Christopher and Kyle Currie. He was predeceased by his wife, Wilma (MacKeen) Powell, brother, Claude and sisters, Susie MacLeod, Jessie Peverly, Laura MacKinnon and Blanche Marks. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Friday in Kirk Memorial United Church, Aspen, with Derek Elsworth officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Aspen. A drop in to celebrate Ray’s life will take place at 373 Waverley Rd., Dartmouth, Saturday, June 14 from 2-5 p.m. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Kirk Memorial United Church, Aspen, or the Nova Scotia Lung Association.
