Alexander (Ekie) McGillivary

75, New Waterford It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Alex (Ekie) McGillivary, Sunday, June 15, 2008, at his home, surrounded by his loving family. Born in New Waterford, he was the son of the late George and Winnifred (Duffney) McGillivary. Ekie was a coal miner for 38 years, working in Nos. 16, 12 and Lingan collieries. He was well known and very active in his community, belonging to a number of organizations, the Strand Committee, the C.B. Radio Club and the Auditorium Committee, the KOC and the New Waterford Pensioners Club. Ekie is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Ag (Carrigan) McGillivary; two sons, Joey (Ellen), North Sydney, and Bobby (Mary), Greenwood; three sisters, Dodie McQuarrie, New Waterford, Tecie MacDonald, Vineland, Ont., Otie Murphy, Montreal; two brothers, Ray (Carol) and Donnie (Donna), both of Hamilton; six grandchildren, Shantell, Joey, Stacey, Joshua, Nicholas and Cody. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by two sons, Blair and Lenny, brother, Eddy (Ann) and three brothers-in-law, John McQuarrie, Neil MacDonald and Lorne Murphy. Visitation for Ekie will be held Wednesday, June 18 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at McLellan Brothers Funeral Home, 3183 Plummer Ave., New Waterford, N.S., 862-7500. A funeral mass to celebrate Ekie’s life will be held Thursday, June 19 at 11 a.m. in the Parish of St. Leonard/Mount Carmel Church with burial to follow in Mount Carmel Cemetery. Following the funeral, a luncheon will be held at the New Waterford Pensioners Club, Plummer Avenue, all are invited. Donations in Ekie’s memory may be made to Palliative Care-An-Cala or to the VON.
