John 'Jack' Simms

98, Glace Bay It is with great sadness that we the family announce the loss of our beloved father, grandfather and great-grandfather, John ‘Jack’ Simms on Saturday, June 21, 2008, at the Glace Bay Healthcare Complex. Dad was born in Pass Island, N.L., Jan. 22, 1910. He was the son of the late Jacob and Alice (Piercy) Simms. Dad worked the coal mines for 33 years in Caledonia and #26. He loved being down in his barn building lawn ornaments and birdhouses. John was predeceased by his wife of 69 years, Viletta (Rideout) Simms, a daughter Thelma, son-in-law, Doddy Osborne, daughters-in-law, Nessie and Edith Simms, brothers, Sandy, Walter, Jake, Phil and Bert. Surviving are sons, Gord (Veronica), Art (Rose), Jack (Helen), Jim (Maureen); daughter, Brenda (Mrs. Bill Munden); many grandchildren and great-grandchildren and a very special friend, Beanie. Visitation for the late John Simms will take place Monday, June 23, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at Patten Funeral Home & Chapel, 71 Union St., Glace Bay, 849-7520. Funeral service will be held Tuesday, June 24, at 11 a.m. at St. Mary’s Anglican Church with Rev. Vernon Reid officiating. Burial in St. Mary’s Cemetery.
