61, Florence It is with great sadness we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father and grandfather Philip Leslie Matthews. Philip passed away peacefully at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital Sydney, on Friday, June 27, 2008, after a long two-year battle with cancer, with his loving family at his side. Born in Florence, he was the son of the late Walter and Gladys (Rose) Matthews. Philip is survived by his wife of 24 years, Judy (Finney) Matthews; daughter, Leah Matthews (Robert Boyce); along with his pride and joy, grandson, Kolby Ryan Matthews. Also daughters, Joanne (Mike) MacCormick, Tina (Robbie) Robinson; sons, Philip and Chris Matthews; grandson, Brett and granddaughter, Haley MacCormick. Philip is also survived by brothers, Bobby, Gilbert (Kathy) and Dave (Margie); sister, Blanche (Kevin) Headley; and many nieces and nephews. Philip also leaves behind special friends, Derrick and Heather Jessome, Florence, Shirley Ann MacIntosh, Sydney, and Dougie Barry, Florence. Philip was predeceased by one brother in infancy and a special nephew, Robert Matthews. In keeping with Philip’s wishes cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held in J.M. Jobes Funeral Home Sydney Mines, Wednesday, July 2 at 2 p.m. with Norma Mills officiating. Donations in Philip’s memory may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or charity of choice.
