Ruth Carmichael RN
Passed on: July 1st, 2008
Sydney It is with deep sadness that we, the family of Ruth Carmichael RN, Coxheath, formerly of North Sydney, announce the passing of our loving wife, mother, sister, grandmother and great-grandmother on July 1, 2008, at her residence. Born in Sydney, Ruth was a daughter of the late Roy and Frances (Soper) Peddle. Ruth graduated from Glace Bay General as a registered nurse, first in her class. She began her nursing career at Harbour View Hospital, Sydney Mines, and worked in nursing administration until her retirement from Northside Harbour View, 33 years later. Ruth will be greatly missed by all who knew her. She made a real difference, not just in her professional life, but the lives of her wide range of friends and extended family. From an early age, Ruth loved singing, since her debut in the Sydney Academy operetta production of the Pirates of Penzance (1951). She sang for numerous weddings and functions, including her own 50th wedding anniversary, where she sang for her husband. Ruth was a member of Calvary Baptist Church, where she was soloist and choir member for 50 plus years. For approximately 20 years, Ruth sat as a board member of the Baptist Senior Homes for Atlantic Canada. Ruth could often be found at St. George’s hall selling her (Swedish needle weaving) T-shirts and for 10 years, she was a member of the Bras d’Or Lakers Craft Guild. Surviving are her husband, George; daughter and best friend, Karen (Victor) Jackson; sons, Robert (Neila) and Donald (Carla); grandchildren, Allan Ryan (Rachel), Jayne Wile (Marcus), Kate, Sarah Tutty (John), Adelle and Amber Buchanan, Graham, Andrew, Nicholas Carmichael, great-grandchild, Brent Tutty; sisters, Margaret Campbell (Duncan), Eva Gillis (Dave) and Carol Peddle (David); brothers, Fraser (Barbara), Robert (Lorraine) and Alan. Ruth was predeceased by her sister, Joan Shaw and brother, Foster. There will be no visitation. A celebration of Ruth’s life will be held at Calvary Baptist Church, North Sydney, Saturday, July 5 at 2 p.m. with Rev. John Hannem officiating. Remembrances may be made to Calvary Baptist Church or Cape Breton Palliative Care. Condolences may be sent to the family at sydneymemorialchapel@ns.sympatico.ca.
